We’ve all grown accustomed to the many fundraisers and charitable events that the pet industry produces for homeless pets. From pet food companies to pet supply manufacturers, the community does a great job of donating to rescues and shelters to help them carry on their work of finding homes for animals and meeting the needs of those animals in their care.
But the giving isn't just limited to pet-related businesses. Many non-pet businesses also recognize the importance of giving to those less fortunate, including homeless pets. In our own hometown, a company that specializes in overhead garage doors regularly sponsors special events for our local animal shelter, most recently sponsoring an annual bowl-a-thon for Texas Humane Heroes. According to Don Grenier, owner of Cedar Park Overhead Doors, “I am always looking for ways to give back to the community and, since my wife and I have two rescue dogs, giving back to the local animal rescue community is the perfect fit.”
Often, the cars that are parked inside those garages regularly transport pets, so it’s a natural fit that a growing number of car dealerships are also encouraging potential car buyers to add a four-legged friend to their family. In Florida, Subaru of Orange Park recently hosted an Adoptathon, covering all adoption fees and donating 100 pounds of food to local shelters for every car sold during the event.
In White Plains, New York, the Pepe Infiniti dealership saw its own role with the rescue community grow in the past year, starting with a photo contest on their Facebook page. An amusing photo of his son holding Leo, a Labradoodle, inspired Mark Hersh, Executive Manager of the dealership, who thought a photo contest would be fun. After the overwhelming success of the virtual event, he decided to hold a dog rescue event in the spacious dealership. “Six rescues from around Westchester County, New York brought five adoptable dogs each to what was called Pepe Infiniti's Fur-Ever Home Dog Adoption event,” recalls Hersh. “Approximately 200 guests came to the event and 12 dogs found Fur-Ever homes.”
The event received such acclaim throughout the community that Mark was asked by The Westchester, an upscale fashion mall, also in White Plains, to reproduce the event. This time, with 12 participating rescues, the event drew a crowd of over 2,500 devoted pet lovers.
