Grumpy Cat Recognized as Internet Sensation
Thursday, December 20, 2012
Most everyone, even people who do not describe themselves as “cat” people, love a good cat video, but who would have ever thought that a Grumpy Cat would be one of the top Internet memes for 2013?
Know Your Meme has named the adorable ever-frowning Grumpy Cat as one of 2013’s top memes.
The cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce – a name given to it by his human sister who misspelled “Tartar” – is also known as “Tard.”
According to this article, Grumpy Cat looks like a breed known as a snowshoe cat, but is in fact, just a mixture of domestic breeds.
While it may seem like forever that we’ve been seeing Grumpy Cat and all of his pessimistic thoughts, the 8-month old kitten has only been an Internet sensation for a little over three months, when his photo first appeared on the site Reddit.
Nothing is wrong with the feline’s face, says his veterinarians, it just appears that the kitty has a permanent scowl.
Grumpy Cat was an immediate hit, gathering over 1 million hits in the first 48 hours after the post.
Grumpy Cat has been noticed for his funny memes such as, “I had fun once. It was awful,” and “You had the red dot this whole time.”
One of his latest memes shows a baby saying, “I’m allergic to cats,” and of course, Grumpy Cat responds, “Good.”
His memes also include some with photos of celebrities such as Steve Perry from the band Journey singing their famous 1980s ballad, “Don’t Stop Believin.” Grumpy Cat, in his sour fashion says, “I never started.”
He’s appeared on NBC’s “Today” Show and has over 184,000 followers on Facebook.
Grumpy Cat reportedly likes to play with red laser lights and has a feline sibling named Pokey.
This kitty may look mean, but that is far from his real personality. According to his owners he is sweet and good natured.
Grumpy Cat, of course, is also very concerned about cat overpopulation and is donating proceeds from sales of t-shirts, mugs, and ornaments on his website to various animal rescues and shelters, including the Arizona Animal Welfare League and The Humane Society of Morrow County.
That’s something to smile about.
