Top 10 Dog Movies of All Time

Every dog lover has a favorite dog movie.  Writers and directors know that having a cute, intelligent dog as a main character will make their movie shine and their wallets bulge. 

Over the last few weeks, we’ve gone doggone crazy over those cuddly canines in the theatres. From Marley & Me to Hotel for Dogs. But what about all of those other flicks featuring our four-legged friends?

In this PetStyle exclusive, we share the movies that are most commonly loved by families everywhere.  Read on and see which ones you'll want to add to your movie queue as we present the top 10 dog movies.

1. 101 Dalmatians:  Any top 10 dog movie list has to start here. In 1961, the animated version of this movie was the highest grossing movie of its time.  Later, in 1996, the live-action version was also a high earner with a lifetime gross of over $136,000,000.  The story or evil Cruella kidnapping litters of Dalmatian puppies for their fur and the race to save them appeals to kids and adults alike.

2. Marley and Me:  The latest in dog films that tug at your heart strings, this movie is already at the top of the charts as far as earnings go, ranking third among all dog movies in the last 35 years.  Expect it to climb higher as it is still going strong in the theaters.  This one is definitely a must-purchase movie.

3. Cats & Dogs:  Ranking just behind Marley and Me in earnings, this is a spy movie with a twist.  The cats, under the direction of evil Mr. Tinkles, are secretly plotting to foil attempts to cure dog allergies in humans.  Secret agent dogs are on the case, working to protect the determined scientist and save human-kind from dog allergies.

4. Eight Below:  Based on the true story of an Antarctic dog-sled guide who is forced to leave his beloved team behind in a terrible storm.  The inventive team is able to work out how to take care of themselves in incredible situations in an effort to be happily reunited with their distraught human.

5. Snow Dogs:  When confirmed dog-hater Ted Brooks travels to Alaska to claim his inheritance he is suddenly intrigued by the sport of mushing.  His determination to win the "Arctic Challenge" makes for a hilarious movie for the whole family.

6. Turner & Hooch:  When Hooch, a drooling, destructive Dogue de Bordeaux, invades the home of detective Scott Turner as the only witness to a murder,you can't help but be drawn in.  Add a love story on the side and you can't help but have an amazing ending.

7. Beethoven:  This lovable, slobbering, colossal canine gets dognapped for animal testing.  His heartbroken family is determined to find him--even Dad, who wanted to get rid of him to begin with. 

8. Benji:  This classic movie about a lovable stray who is cared for by some neighborhood children whose father won't allow them to have a dog.  When the children are kidnapped, Benji takes on the mission of rescuing them--even though he can't get any humans to understand him. A real tear-jerker, this is another must have for your movie collection.

9. Best in Show:   In this comic view of the world of dog shows, you'll find the obsessive owners hysterical and the beautiful dogs irresistible.  Not your typical dog movie, you will find this documentary-style film just the thing to lift your mood.

10. Lassie Come Home:  Our last movie in our top 10 dog movies is a timeless classic and a movie everyone should see.  Your heart will swell as you follow the story of a dog who's undying love for her boy takes her though perilous encounters to get back home.  Lassie is the hero of dog trainer Cesar Millan.  She'll be your hero, too.
