Comments about Lotus Wholesome Grain Free Turkey Pate for Cats Canned Food:

I will not feed any food with carrageenan, so I was very excited to find another option without this sketchy ingredient. It's also great that it doesn't contain xanthan gum or guar gum. Major kudos to Lotus for this! Both of my cats will eat this food, but it's not their favorite. It is very dense, so I did try adding additional water a few times - unlike the other reviewer's cats, my cats DID NOT like this food with extra water added.

I like that this food is turkey based, as many of the other foods I feed are chicken based and I like to give my cats as much protein variety as possible. I rotate several brands of canned cat foods (practically every brand that doesn't include carrageenan), and I will probably keep this in the rotation on a 2 can per week basis despite the concerns I address below.

This food appears to be quite high in carbohydrates and the protein content is too low in my opinion. I used a dry matter basis calculator (easy to find online) and plugged in this food's numbers. I discovered this food is approx. 36% protein, 23% fat, and has a whopping 23.5% carbs on a dry matter basis. That is WAY too many carbs for a canned food! Protein content also should be over 40% (preferably in the 50%+ range) on a dry matter basis. I'm not overly concerned because some of the other foods I rotate have very high protein (up to 80%) and much lower carbs, so everything probably balances out. However, I think this food would be inappropriate as a primary diet because of it's high carbs/low protein. We need to remember that cats are obligate carnivores that thrive on meat, not carbs and vegetables.

Comments about Lotus Wholesome Grain Free Turkey Pate for Cats Canned Food:

I am switching to Lotus from Wellness, because Lotus does not contain Carrageenan, it is locally produced, and has other high quality ingredients - and of course, grain free which is all I feed. Also like that their cans are apparently bpa free. The pate texture seems a little smoother or drier than the Wellness my 3 cats are used to. They seem to like it better with a little water added, and all 3 seem to be accepting it well as they get used to the change. I'm still offering it in combination with other food, but this is the one I'm reordering for their new, regular food. Dishes are usually licked clean now, so it's all good. I'm happy it comes in the larger cans.
