Product Information

Use Comfortis once a month to kill fleas and prevent flea infestations in your dog. Chewable tablets with beef flavoring make it easy to administer this medication to your dog too!

What is Comfortis? Comfortis is a chewable tablet that is given to kill fleas. It is also indicated for the prevention and treatment of flea infestations in dogs.

Comfortis is formulated for: Dogs and puppies over 14 weeks of age?

What are the benefits of Comfortis? Comfortis is flavored and can be given orally so it is easy to administer. This medication starts killing fleas within 30 minutes and lasts for 30 days. It helps to kill fleas before they have a chance to lay eggs. Spinosad is the active ingredient in Comfortis and it is environmentally friendly which is an added bonus!

How does Comfortis work? This medication contains Spinosad. Spinosad works to kill fleas by exciting the flea’s nervous system resulting in paralysis and rapid death.

How is Comfortis administered? Comfortis is given orally (by mouth). It is flavored and chewable so most dogs take it readily. This medication should ideally be given with food in order to achieve a maximal effect.

If vomiting occurs within one hour of administration, you should administer another full dose.

For optimal results, give Comfortis one month before fleas become active and continue this medication monthly through the end of flea season. If fleas are common year-round, give this medication monthly for all 12 months of the year.

Dosing is based on your dog’s body weight. If your dog is over 120 lbs, a combination of the appropriate sizes of medication are usually necessary to achieve maximal results.

Only a veterinarian can prescribe Comfortis for your dog. This medication should only be given to the pet that it is prescribed for.

What results can I expect? Comfortis should start to kill fleas within 30 minutes. This medication should then be effective for 30 days.

If your dog was already infested with fleas when Comfortis was given, fleas may linger beyond 30 days because immature fleas in the environment may hatch.

Speak with your veterinarian about precautions you can take in order to kill and prevent fleas in addition to using Comfortis.

What Form(s) does Comfortis come in? Comfortis is a chewable tablet with beef flavoring. It is available in 5 different strengths based on your dog’s body weight. Sizes range from 140 mg (5-10 lbs) to 1620 mg (60.1-120 lbs).

Common Brand Name: Comfortis (Lilly)

Generic Name: Spinosad (Common Drug Name)

Uses: Comfortis is used to kill fleas and to prevent flea infestations in dogs for a full month.

Dose and Administration: Comfortis is generally given once a month but always follow your veterinarian’s directions. It is recommended to give Comfortis chewable tablets with food.

Comfortis chewable tablets may be chewed, offered in food, or administered directly in the mouth like other medications.

If your pet vomits his/her medication within 1 hour of administration, you can repeat the dose.

Ideally, it is recommended to start giving Comfortis one month before fleas become active. After that, this medication should be given monthly through the end of the flea season.

If fleas are common in your area year-round, continue Comfortis monthly all 12 months of the year.

If there are fleas in the home, all pets should be treated with appropriate flea medication. Fleas need to be on your dog for this medication to kill them. Talk to your vet about other strategies you can use to eliminate flea infestations from your home.

Only give this medication to the pet that your veterinarian prescribes it for. If you are unsure of how to use this medication correctly, contact your veterinarian.

Possible Side Effects: Rarely, side effects have been reported when Comfortis is given at the recommended dosage.

Possible side effects include vomiting, decreased appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, cough, excessive thirst, vocalization, increased appetite, redness of skin, hyperactivity, and excessive salivation. If your dog acts unusual in any way after he/she is given Comfortis, consult your veterinarian immediately.

If your dog is truly allergic to Comfortis, he/she may experience facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If you think your pet is experiencing an allergic reaction to this medication, contact your veterinarian without delay.

Precautions: Do not use Comfortis in animals who are hypersensitive (allergic) to spinosad.

This medication should be used with caution in breeding, pregnant or lactating animals (female animals nursing their young). Spinosad can enter the mother's milk.

If your dog is lactating, consult your veterinarian before using this product. It is uncertain whether it is safe to give Comfortis to breeding males as studies have not been performed.

If your dog/puppy is less than 14 weeks of age, he/she should not be given Comfortis.

If your dog takes ivermectin, giving Comfortis at the same time may not be safe.

Do not use this medication in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy without speaking with your veterinarian as it should be used with caution in these animals.

Drug and Food Interactions: Always tell your veterinarian about any medications, supplements, or vitamins your dog is taking before giving him/her Comfortis. Avoid use of this medication in animals that are receiving high doses of ivermectin, as ivermectin toxicity may occur.

Storage: Comfortis should be stored at room temperature and out of reach of children and pets.

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Comfortis.

Comfortis is a monthly pill that protects against fleas. My husband and I have a pitbull mix that has flea allergies. We started him out on puppy flea shampoos, they did not work. Neither did Frontline or Advantix. After talking to our vet, he recommended Comfortis. After 3 days, Buster no long itched like crazy and his skin started to heal. Since then, we have never found any fleas.

This product is amazing, however it can be pricey. Ordering it online seems to be the cheapest place to get it. You can get it at your pet's vet pill by pill, but you end up paying almost $40 more that way (Buster's pills are $20 EACH! if we go pill by pill from the vet). This product can upset your pet's stomach, and is recommended that the pill be given with food. We put it in Buster's evening meal. It is not recommended to be taken on the same day as Heartguard (don't know why, but vet said so) but can be taken on the same day as Iverhart.
