Product Information

Trifexis will help to keep your dog safe from the nasty bugs that he/she encounters while outdoors. One chewable tablet given monthly kills fleas and prevents infestations, protects against heartworms, and treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections.

What is Trifexis? Trifexis is a 5-way parasite preventative. It is a flavored chewable tablet that can be given on a monthly basis in order kill fleas, prevent flea infestations, protect your dog against heartworms, and provide protection again 3 common intestinal parasites: roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.

Trifexis is formulated for: dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age or older weighing at least 5 lbs.

What are the benefits of Trifexis? Trifexis protects against 5 different parasites all in one monthly chewable tablet that is easy to administer. It works to kill fleas, prevent fleas, prevent heartworm disease, and treat/control against roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms which are common intestinal parasites. It combines two active ingredients in order to provide your dog with maximum protection. Tablets are flavored so most dogs will take them readily as a treat! Oral administration also makes dosing clean and safe for other pets and children in your household.

How does Trifexis work? This preventative medication contains two active ingredients: Milbemycin oxime and spinosad. Milbemycin oxime acts as a heartworm preventive. It is effective in killing the immature form of the heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis), which is transmitted by a mosquito. Milbemycin is also useful in killing adult hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms which are common intestinal parasites that can cause harm to your dog. The spinosad in Trifexis prevents and controls flea infestations by killing adult fleas and immature fleas before they have a chance to mature.

What results can I expect? Trifexis starts working within 30 minutes and has been proven to kill 100% of all biting fleas within 4 hours. It also helps to end the flea life cycle by killing flea eggs before they have the chance to mature. You can also expect Trifexis to prevent heartworm disease by killing microfilariae and larvae before they develop into adult heartworms. In addition, Trifexis provides adequate control/treatment against the following intestinal parasites: roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.

What Form(s) does Trifexis come in? Trifexis is a chewable tablet with beef flavoring. It is available in 5 sizes to suit your dog’s body weight.

Common Brand Name: Trifexis (Elanco)

Generic Name: Milbemycin oxime plus spinosad (Common Drug Name)

Uses: Trifexis is given to dogs one time per month in order to prevent heartworm disease, kill fleas, prevent flea infestations, and treat/control adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections.

Drug and Food Interactions: Always tell your veterinarian about any medications, vitamins, or supplements your dog is taking before you start giving him/her Trifexis. Some serious adverse reactions have been documented when spinosad and ivermectin at doses higher than the heartworm prevention dose were used simultaneously. No known food interactions have been reported.

Storage: This medication should be stored in a tight, light-resistant, childproof container at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Possible Side Effects: If using Trifexis at the recommended dosage, side effects are rare. Symptoms of gastrointestinal distress and skin irritation can occur. Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy (decreased activity), lack of appetite, and itching and reddening of the skin are possible. If you observe any of these signs or any unusual symptoms in your dog once Trifexis has been administered, contact your veterinarian immediately. Vomiting may be more likely in puppies under 14 weeks of age.

If your dog is truly allergic to Trifexis or to the dying of parasites, he/she may exhibit symptoms such as facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If your dog experiences any of these symptoms, call your veterinarian or a local emergency veterinarian immediately.

Dose and Administration: Trifexis is a chewable tablet that should be given by mouth (orally) with food in order to achieve the maximal effect. It is given once a month seasonally or year-round. Try to administer each dose on the same day every month. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions regarding the use of Trifexis. Generally, Once a month administration is what is most common. You may be directed to give this medication every month or just in warm months when mosquitoes and fleas are most prevalent. There are several sizes of this medication available that are based on your dog’s body weight. If you are giving Trifexis seasonally, it should be administered during and 3 months beyond the mosquito season, preferably on the same date each month. Treatment with less than 3 monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not be effective. This medication should not be given to any dogs other than the one that your veterinarian prescribes it for. Do not split tablets. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If more than one month has passed since the last dose of Trifexis, check with your veterinarian as a repeat heartworm test may be necessary. Contact your veterinarian regarding Trifexis if you have further questions or if you are not sure how to administer this medication properly.

My big dog has been on Trifexis for several years and he has never had any side effects from it. It is a bit expensive from my vet and I am going to start ordering it online.
The only negative thing I can say about this medication is, my dog hates the taste and won't chew it. My dog eats dry dog food but every month I have to give him wet dog food with the Trifexis tablet crushed up and mixed in it. This is the only way he will eat it.
It would be nice if this medication would come in a capsule so I could just have my dog swallow it.

We have been giving our 11 month old mix Trifexis at the recommendation of our vet since we have had him (6 months). Two weeks after his latest dose, he was seeming lethargic and we needed a new box of Trifexis, so we decided to take him in for the regular check-up he was slightly overdue for. At the check-up, his fecal came back positive for hookworms; thinking that surely Elanco's satisfaction guarantee would cover treatment, we gave him a prescription of Drontal ($56) at our vet's recommendation. Now, after both myself and my vet have talked to the Elanco rep, we have been told that Elanco will not honor any guarantee since the infection was discovered as part of a regular check-up. I understand that the worm has a short cycle and it is possible that he could test positive that soon after a dose, but based on his possible exposure I find it unlikely (clean yard) and the reaction of Elanco has left me extremely displeased. We will not continue treating with Trifexis, and I certainly would not recommend the product to others.

    Comments about Trifexis for Dogs:

We use Trifexis monthly and are pleased with the fact that we never have to worry about fleas or ticks. It is one pill once monthly with no additional need for other preventative/protective preparations. It is quite expensive but when you add prices of alternative meds/preparations and that it is one thing adminIsterd monthly, the cost is reasonable. None of my dogs have enjoyed taking it, so I have had to disguise it in a variety of ways and watch closey to make.sure they do receive it.

            Comments about Trifexis for Dogs:

I like that the product works for both fleas and heartworm. My only complaint is that the tablet smells horrible and my dog wouldn't touch it, unlike heartguard which he thinks is a treat. I attempted to break the tablet into small pieces and hide it in a piece of lunch meat but he still smelled it and refused to eat it. I then crushed it up and mixed it with peanut butter (which he loves) and that seemed to do the trick. If the manufacturer would just make it more palatable to dogs this would be the perfect solution. I was a little nervous after reading some reviews on here but my dog showed no abnormal symptoms after taking the medication.

            Comments about Trifexis for Dogs:

Your Trifexis is expensive but I purchased from you because I was able to receive a Rebate on the cost by shopping on the Ebates website. Initially, I was given the $13.30 rebate but later was notified by Ebates that the rebate was cancelled, along with an earlier order rebate. I have emailed your customer service on several occasions but still do not have a response as to why my rebates were cancelled. As much as I like some of your products, I will not shop again unless the rebates are returned to me via Ebates.
