Both of my cats began using the box when I mixed it 50-50 w/Eisley's Clumping Litter as it darkened the appearance - like outdoors - and felt more normal to them (cats have their own reasons).

To reduce the (not strong) used litter odor problem, I scoop more often and add a bit more Eisley's corn clumping litter before I have time to change the box.

However, the natural walnut and corn litters are easier for the cats to 'kick off' their feet vs. the tiny hard bits which stick between cat toes from clay clumping kinds. I just put mats or towels at ends of boxes to catch the odd pieces.

Walnut litter doesn't seem to cling to long-haired furry cat paws as often occurs with the clumping clay kinds. Small bits of clay can harden between cat toes and become a major problem for them to remove, which can be a problem for us, who often have to 'help' them get it off their paws - and bitten in the process.

Watch your cat bite at his/her feet. Check toenails for clipping, of course, but also feel between those tiny toes for hard dry litter clumps which got stuck when they were wet. They adhere like glue.

Both my kitten and 18-yr-old Maine Coon use it willingly - and both were >vagrant< cats who wandered in, could have left but stayed (good food?). I think they think the dark walnut looks more outdoor 'normal' than does light clay. Whatever. (Eisley's also makes an attractant which can be sprinkled on top of the litter.)

I also have a 2nd box of pure Eisley's (multiple clumping), and, yes, a 3rd box of reg. clumping clay. So, there's cats for you.

Always have one (1) more box than cat. My 2 cats have 3 boxes of different sizes and type, each has a different litter and is located separately from the others. Privacy is important. Each box is scooped and changed regularly. Never put food or water bowls near boxes as cats will NOT eat where they have their bathroom. They are genetically smart. My cats notify me when they are dissatisfied with their 'toilette'.

I've found that cat boxes, sizes, litter types and locations ALL depend on each cat, the location of the boxes, and whether other cats may attack, watch, etc.

*Remember - you are also inhaling the dust from the cat boxes as you scoop - walnut litter has little, if any, dust. Think before buying litter which disintegrates (doesn't clump) after long-time scooping and deliquent box-changing. Your lungs are also important. Wash hands and arms after working with litter boxes: Toxoplasmosis is dangerous to pregnant women.

The main thing is to be aware of your cat's preferences, habits and abilities, esp. as they age, are ill, or have injuries, etc.

Be as careful of them as you would a Loved One in your home. They are our Guests, whom we chose to be with us, not our property which we can ignore or discard as a toy. Love them and care for them as you do yourself. That love is returned a hundred fold.

I bought the small bag of this litter. I always hear about blue buffalo having high end products and when I went searching for something to help me with a litter box for six kittens I figured this was the way to go. I liked how it was made from walnut shells which gave it a good smell but it did not clump at all. The urine would just stay in one spot and you would have to scoop out a gooey kind of saturated area which would be half of the litter box. Maybe if you had one kitten or a cat that pees very little then this product would be for you.

Comments about Blue Buffalo Blue Naturally Fresh Quick Clumping Cat Litter:

My cat Cesar had 2 asthma attacks in 3 years from clay litter. He had NEVER had asthma in the 10 years I had him. The first time was frightening and the vet was not helpful. My cat didn't HAVE asthma, he had an attack. Even I would sneeze when I changed & cleaned & scooped the litter boxes. So I removed the litter box lid. 2 years later Cesar had another attack, not as severe but I immediately dumped the clay litter and thankfully this new litter was just out and I had heard of it. I have tried World's Best Cat Litter but my cats (Cesar & his mom, Cleo) had issues with it making their feet break out), THAT litter was great, but I couldn't use it. So this new litter has very little airborne dust, it is a natural product and Cesar accepted it immediately. My new little ones are fine with it as well. It clumps beautifully. Frankly, I don't know any litter that stops odor without masking it with perfume, or any litter that doesn't do some tracking. I scoop immediately if there is an odor and my home does not have a litter box odor-ever. Keep them scooped daily and at least twice a day with more than 1 cat and you don't have any odor. Realistically, you want something NATURAL and not potentially harmful to the cats, the owners or the environment. I believe, this litter is the answer.
