Last year our 14 year old pointer went on this diet after getting bloodwork back that she was in the beginning stages of kidney failure. Since she has been on this food her bloodwork has come back within normal range. She has done really well on this formula. She is 15 this year and her blood work was good enough to allow her to go under for a much needed dental appointment.

Our 6 year old pointer likes this food as well. I try to feed her her own food, but if she has a choice, she will even opt for this food over her own!

I just wish these veterinary formulas didn't cost so much but the proof is in the bloodwork. She also hasn't had a bladder/kidney infection since she started on this food.

I can't make a solid case for either recommending this food or not and here is why. My vet recommended this food "formula" since my dog drinks a ton of water and as expected, urinates quite frequently. He has gone through a battery of tests to determine if he has diabetes, kidney or liver issues and they still don't know what is wrong with him. They recommended this, assuming it would help, but I'm not seeing any difference in his condition. Based on other reviews and dogs not eating the other brands, I purchased this and he will eat it, but it's not making the impact I had hoped for.

I live in a very rural area and would have to drive 90 miles one way to find a store that carries this product which is necessary for my dog who has kidney disease. I appreciate your quick service!

Comments about Purina Veterinary Diets NF Kidney Function Canine Formula Dry Food:

Our Mini Schnauzer was diagnosed with kidney disease and while she was in the hospital for a week she would not touch any of the other brands of special diet food. We took her home and I tried to feed her a homemade diet but her protein levels were still too high. We had tried the other brands at home too, but she would literally pick out the dog food and leave it on the floor. Purina NF was our last hope to get her diet on track. She now only eats the dry kibble which she loves. We did try the canned NF also, but she does not like it. We are very grateful that she loves the kibble.

Great stuff - the taste must be OK as he eats it. Has done the trick and it's well worth paying a bit more.

Dog loves the food. I add a little bit of water.
Vet prescribed kidney diet due to the lower protein % in this food. It is expensive so if you dog is overweight it is a good incentive not to overfeed.
