As I've been advocating for all feline lovers, cats are strict carnivores. It means that your cat's nutritional needs are met by the consumption of a large amount of animal-based proteins (meat/organs) and derives much less nutritional support from plant-based proteins (grains/vegetables). Cats lack specific metabolic (enzymatic) pathways and cannot utilize plant proteins as efficiently as animal proteins.

It is very important to remember that not all proteins are created equal. Proteins derived from animal tissues have a complete amino acid profile. Plant-based proteins do not contain the full complement of the critical amino acids required by an obligate carnivore. The quality and composition of a protein is also referred to as its biological value.

Taurine is one of the most important amino acids that is present in meat but is missing from plants. Taurine deficiency will cause blindness and heart problems in cats.

Because plant proteins are cheaper than meat proteins, pet food companies will have a higher profit margin when using corn, wheat, soy, rice, etc. Grains are cheap. Many canned foods contain approximately 3-5% carbohydrates - canned foods also have a lot of water in them which is a good thing. In the wild, your cat would be eating a high protein, high-moisture (up to 75% water - remember, the human body is 70% water so think of small prey having the same or more amounts of water in their body composition), meat-based diet, with a moderate level of fat and with only approximately 3-5% of her diet consisting of carbohydrates. The average dry food contains 35-50% carbohydrate calories. Some of the cheaper dry foods contain even higher levels.

Cats have no dietary need for carbohydrates and a diet that is high in carbohydrates can be detrimental to their health, causing urinary tract problems, like eating too much salt will dehydrate humans, carbs will dehydrate your cat. Cats will also eat until that protein quotient is filled, causing over-eating of the cheap stuff, obesity (and thus diabetes) in cats. My cat, AC, had a sister who I made that mistake with. I lost DC in 2009 to feline diabetes - she was wildly overweight as she tried to use the cheap cat food to fill her protein quotient, actually eating more grains and carbs that her body couldn't process or even use. Cats are actually intolerant to gluten, causing allergic reactions (AC had scabs all over his body before I noticed anything). An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure - that bag of good food may be expensive, but having to put your cat down because you can't afford the diabetes medication is more so - and you lose your friend. And I promise, this bag will last for a very long time.

FEED YOUR CATS PROTEIN! Especially if they are indoor-only cats.

This is the ONLY food I give AC, my 13-lb. indoor-only Maine Coon, no table scraps and his treats are boiled pieces of chicken. Not only has he lost weight and the scabs are gone, he's more playful, more loving - he wants to be petted and picked up and played with, he doesn't shed NEARLY as much as he used to (we only brush him once or twice a month), hairballs are non-existant, he doesn't produce excess ear wax (also an allergic reaction to gluten) so his big Maine Coon ears are nice and clean. He's a kitten again at 6-years old, and we expect many more happy years with him :)

Comments about Royal Canin Veterinary Diets Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline Hypoallergenic HP 23 Dry Cat Food:

We purchased this product because our 11 year old cat was having digestive issues and as a result was losing a lot of weight. After lots of testing at the vet, one recommendation was this food. We purchased it and within a few weeks she had regained the weight she lost.

I got my cat from the pound. She was ten years old and had food allergies, which were diagnosed by my vet. We tried another brand of hypoallergenic food first, but she didn't much care for it. But she LOVES Royal Canin and her regurgitation has been eliminated. She's a healthy weight, very active, and thriving. This product has vastly improved my kitty's enjoyment of life. Thanks Royal Canin!
