We have 3 cats and one of them has been diabetic for many years. We spend over $1200+ a year on insulin for him. A few months ago one of our cats began to urinate on the floor and we found out he had a terrible bladder infection. I did a lot of research on it and found a great web site that a vet runs (no HTML allowed here, so search for feline diabetes and Dr. Lisa Pierson). I found out that grains are bad for cats and almost every cat food has them. Dry food & high carbs are also bad for cats. One of the recommended foods was the Nature's Variety Instinct (grain free). We began to buy it and feed our cats that along with some of their Hills Prescription food that we paid $$$$$ for at our vet. We only did this because the cats were used to always having food in their bowl and would beg a lot if it was not there. A few weeks ago, we finally cut off all dry food completely and just feed them 2 cans of this per day (for 3 cats). It is AMAZING, but it looks like our diabetic cat needs much less or even no insulin now! He was acting strange the other day and we took him to the vet. They checked his blood sugar and it was way too low. This means that the insulin he got in the morning was too much. In addition, we had already lowered him to only one dose a day, instead of two that he had been getting previously. This was done purely on observing him, which is not a scientific way to determine blood sugar. However, he had been doing well on only one dose per day. When the dry food was removed, the single dose became too much. He is going in to the vet in a couple of days for lab tests, and we will find out if the insulin can be completely stopped. Even if he still needs a little bit, we will be saving a ton of money, even buying this food. Do your cats a favor, spend a little extra on this food now, or you will be paying a lot more later in vet bills!

I got this for my senior cat who has a tendency to get obese. She also hasn't been eating much for some reason, and sometimes throwing up. I was also looking for a grain-free, no guar gum and no carrageenan. Sadly, my cat doesn't like it. She just walks away. She'd rather starve. It doesn't smell all that enticing. I have to put kitty treats in it to make her even eat a quarter of the can. I have had success while mixing it with other foods, but I have to make sure the proportions are equal, otherwise she just simply won't touch.

However, I do like the ingredients, and my other cat loves it.

Comments about Nature's Variety Instinct Chicken Formula Canned Cat Food:

Bailey had been suffering with lots of gas and soft stools for the past 4 years but this product combined with grain free kibbles has made all the difference. I'm so thankful to have made my sweet kitty much more comfortable.

Juicy, smells fresh, I know it's natural and not mystery meat and it has NO preservatives. My Kidney Cat (17 1/2 yrs old) loves this!! The fact that it has lots of broth/juice is also a big plus when I'm feeding it to my her -- I also add a little extra water to it and she eats it with gusto and licks her dish clean!!
