Product Information

I am my dog’s best friend. We have known each other for a very long time. My best friend needs more of my care now that he is aging. Hill’s Prescription Diet h/d Canine Cardiac Health is for the nutritional management of dogs with heart disease, including high blood pressure and fluid retention. Heart disease and heart failure are conditions frequently found in aging dogs. Typically, heart disease can cause the heart to become enlarged, leading to fluid retention and discomfort for your dog. Fluid retention is in response to a less efficient heart muscle and can be made a bigger problem with foods that are high in sodium.

This Canine Cardiac Health food for aging dogs has a low level of sodium to help maintain normal blood pressure; a high level of taurine to help support cardiac muscle metabolism; a high level of L-carnitine for healthy heart function; and increased B-vitamins and magnesium to help replenish nutrients lost when receiving diuretics.

Prescription Diet h/d Canine dog food is formulated to help manage dogs with the symptoms of heart disease and related fluid retention.

I use this food at the recommendation of my dog's Vet after my dog was diagnosed with a mitral valve heart condition. Although the food is heart friendly, I think it is over cost for the amount of food you get and you could cook a heart friendly diet for your dog at home and it would be more cost effective. I trust Science Diet but this food is very expensive considering how little you are getting. I am considering this alternative. My dog will not eat as much food as she should because she is not crazy about the taste unless I add some salt free veggies in it or something healthy to spiff up the taste. This makes the cost of this food even more cost INeffective. Whether I would recommend it to a friend would depend on how much the friend's dog liked the food. It is good for a dog with a heart condition, but if the dog doesn't eat as much as he/she should, it doesn't help. There are asterisks involved.

This was recommended by my vet for my Doberman, he has Cardiomyopathy, and this is a heart healthy food.

Unfortunately, it is rather expensive, but PetFoodDirect has the best prices, and he is worth every penny.

He isn't crazy about the food, although my little dog loves to pick up the spilled food, and seems to love it! I tend to add a little something to help it more palatable.

Bottom line, I would recommended PetMedDirect when comparing vet and other website prices, plus the specials on shipping help as well!

    Hills H/D Kibble Review

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Canine Dry Food:

One of my Greyhounds has a heart issue which requires her to eat a kibble, or canned dog food, made for dogs who have heart issues. I have always used Science Diet. Even though she prefers the S/D I feed my other Greyts, this food is the best for her and at the best value I have found after shopping around. It also comes in canned form. She does tire of the flavor so I mix some warm no-salt vegetable broth or other no-salt soups in it to spruce it up for her and she enjoys that. The key is no salt. I will continue to purchase the Hills H/D food for my Greyt as long as she needs it. I would say keeping the taste from being boring is the biggest challenge over time in this food but it is necessary to keep her heart performing at its best.

This hd product so far appears to be stabilizing my yorkies gaiging and coughing due to his heart murmor.

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Canine Dry Food:

At first I was skeptical about my yorkie eating this product. He is very fussy. Because he is 13 years old and has this heat murmur it is very important for me to do everything possible to assist in his heart health. My concern is the cans are so big and I would like to see to a smaller can, eg size of a tuna fish can would be soo much more practical for the smaller breeds of dogs.

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Canine Dry Food:

My 70lb boxer has been a picky eater his whole life. At age 9 he was diagnosed with heart disease and my Vet recommended this food. I was so worried that he wouldn't eat it as he has went on hunger strikes before with food changes. To my surprise, he eats this with no problem and hasn't shown any clinical signs of disease progression. I would definitely recommend this to others.

It's good stuff. The dog likes it and it's improved his heart condition. He doesn't cough anymore and he's a lot more active. It's kind of pricey.

Comments about Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Canine Dry Food:

I had read the reviews and was so afraid my pug would not like this food that her Vet said was imperative she eat. So, despite the high cost, I ordered it and it arrived just a couple days after I ordered it. We filled her bowl and were preparing some low salt broth to put on it to make it more palatable and she had already eaten it. She is fussy, so it was a great relief.
