Product Information

Metacam is a great option to help with pain and inflammation associated with arthritis in dogs. In addition, this medication can be helpful in relieving fever and other forms of pain due to inflammation.

What is Metacam? Metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication that is helpful in relieving pain, inflammation, and symptoms associated with arthritis in dogs.

Metacam is formulated for: dogs. The safe use of Metacam in dogs less than 6 months of age and in pregnant, breeding, or nursing dogs has not been evaluated.

What are the benefits of Metacam? Metacam is a liquid suspension with a delicious honey flavor. The liquid formulation and the graduate dosing syringe make it easier to dose accurately in dogs of all sizes. The great honey flavor appeals to many dogs which allows for easy administration.

How does Metacam work? Metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication that works to inhibit the cell's production of chemicals that trigger inflammation. Less inflammation means less pain and more comfort for your dog.

What results can I expect? While there is no cure for arthritis, Metacam can effectively manage symptoms of pain and inflammation. Pain and inflammation can be relieved within hours to days but can vary from dog to dog. Symptoms may reoccur if Metacam is discontinued.

What Form(s) does Metacam come in? Metacam is a liquid suspension.

Common Brand Name: Metacam (Boehringer Ingelheim)

Generic Name: Meloxicam (drug name)

Uses: Metacam is used to treat pain and inflammation associated with canine arthritis and other types of inflammatory conditions. It can also be used as a fever reducer in some situations.

Dose and Administration: It is generally recommended to give Metacam orally once daily but you should always follow the directions given by your veterinarian. Ask your veterinarian if you do not understand the directions. Metacam can be given with (especially with small dogs) or without food. You can give Metacam liquid suspension directly in your dog’s mouth or in his/her food. Keep plenty of water available for your pet if he/she is taking this medication. If you miss a dose, give Metacam as soon as you remember. However, if is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Never give two doses at once. For long-term treatment, it is always recommended to use the lowest dose necessary to provide relief.

Possible Side Effects: Metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication. The most common side effects of NSAIDs are gastrointestinal in nature and may include loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, diarrhea, or constipation. Gastrointestinal ulceration is possible. Dark, tarry or bloody stools may occur. Metacam can affect the kidneys and related symptoms include increased thirst and urination, or changes in the urine color or smell. The liver can also be compromised with NSAIDs and may cause jaundice (yellowing of the gums, skin, or eyes). Other side effects may include pale gums, lethargy, shedding, incoordination, seizures, or behavioral changes. Signs of an allergic reaction to Metacam include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If any unusual symptoms occur while your dog is taking Metacam, stop treatment and contact your veterinarian.

Precautions: Talk to your veterinarian about what tests and exams may be necessary while your pet is taking Metacam. Also discuss how long the treatment period will be and what type of outcome is expected. You and your veterinarian should talk about any other treatment options that are recommended for your pet. For arthritic pets, weight loss programs, exercise programs, supplements, and other aids may be helpful. Tell your veterinarian if your dog is experiencing any vomiting or diarrhea, has liver or kidney disease, has a bleeding disorder, may be pregnant or is nursing, or if you intend to breed your dog. Notify your veterinarian of any other medications or supplements your dog is taking, and also if your dog has had any reactions to previous medications.

Drug and Food Interactions: Possible interactions may occur with other NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, etodolac (EtoGesic), deracoxib (Deramaxx), tepoxalin (Zubrin), firocoxib (Previcox), carprofen (Novox, Rimadyl)); steroids (e.g., prednisone, prednisolone, dexamethasone, Medrol, triamcinolone); methotrexate, oral anticoagulants (heparin, warfarin), phenylpropanolamine, ACE inhibitors (certain heart medications such as enalapril), and Phenobarbital. Metacam should not be used use in animals that are hypersensitive (allergic) to meloxicam (Metacam). Always tell your veterinarian if your dog is taking any other medications or supplements before starting Metacam.

Storage: Store Metacam at room temperature in a tight, light resistant, childproof container. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Metacam.

My Paco, a chihuahua mix ,is about 14. He has become less active and is blind. His vet suggested this medication. I saw no change in his behavior when taking it. For me, with arthritis in my hands the measuring of the medication was unnecesarily complex and the cost was out of line with the results. Way too much. .

Comments about Metacam Anti-Inflammatory Oral Suspension For Dogs:

Our Yellow Lab has been on this since he was about 4 yrs old. He was without it for two weeks and we noticed a big difference. We make a little cup with cookie dough and put the liquid in that and he takes it very good that way. This is not is hard on a dog's liver as some other meds. It can become expensive so we always shop for good buys on it. Our Lab is 5 months from being 14yrs old.
