Product Information

Methimazole is an oral medication that is used to treat hyperthyroidism in cats. Hyperthyroidism is a condition that causes the body to make too much thyroid hormone. Methimazole helps control your cat’s symptoms of hyperthyroidism which may include increased appetite, vomiting, and weight loss.

What is Methimazole? Methimazole is a tablet that is given by mouth (orally) as directed by your veterinarian to control hyperthyroidism in cats. This medication does not cure the disease but it will help to control the condition which should relieve your cat’s hyperthyroid symptoms. Methimazole has also been used to protect the kidneys in dogs receiving cisplatin, an anti-cancer drug although this is a less common use of the medication.

Methimazole is formulated for: Methimazole can be used in dogs but it is much more widely used in cats.

What are the benefits of Methimazole? Methimazole can be used to control hyperthyroid symptoms which results in an improved quality of life for your cat. This medication is given by mouth (orally) at home so it is a less invasive treatment option than surgery or radioactive iodine . This medication is also an affordable option for treating hyperthyroidism.

How does Methimazole work? Methimazole works to decrease the amount of thyroid hormone that is produced by the thyroid gland. This helps to control the condition but it is not a cure.

How is Methimazole administered? This medication is given orally (by mouth). Tablets are very bitter so they may be difficult to administer. You can use a "pill pocket" or another treat to help get your pet to take it. You can also give Methimazole with a small amount of food if you have trouble getting your pet to take it. The dosage of medication that is right for your pet will vary so always follow your veterinarian’s precise directions. If you have difficulty giving this medication or if you do not understand the directions, contact your veterinarian. Once the optimal dose for your pet has been determined, this medication usually needs to be given for the rest of his/her life. It is essential that blood levels of thyroid hormone be checked by your veterinarian at regular intervals. Based on your pet’s thyroid level, the dose of medication may be increased or decreased as needed. The lowest effective dose should be used. Your veterinarian will let you know the frequency of blood testing that is necessary for your pet. Do not give this medication to any pet other than the one that it has been prescribed for.

What results can I expect? Methimazole should help to lower the level of thyroid hormone in hyperthyroid cats. This should result in a reduction of your cat’s symptoms and should help your cat to feel better. It can take 1-4 weeks for the level of thyroid hormone produced by the body to decrease. Methimazole will not cure the disease itself but it should help to control it. This medication usually needs to be given for the rest of the cat's life in order for it to control the disease.

What Form(s) does Methimazole come in?
These are tablets that are given orally (by mouth).

Common Brand Name: Tapazole

Generic Name: Methimazole

Uses: Methimazole is primarily used to control hyperthyroidism in cats which is a condition that causes the thyroid gland to produce a higher than normal amount of thyroid hormone. Methimazole helps to treat hyperthyroidism by decreasing the production of thyroid hormone which helps control the condition. Methimazole is less commonly used in dogs to protect the kidneys while receiving cisplatin which is an anti-cancer drug.

Dose and Administration: This medication is given orally (by mouth). It is commonly given twice daily or every twelve hours although the exact dose and dosing frequency for your pet will be determined by your veterinarian. Always follow your veterinarian’s precise instructions regarding the use of Methimazole. If you do not understand the directions on the label, ask your veterinarian to explain them to you. The dose may be adjusted based on your pet’s response to treatment and based on thyroid monitoring. Once your pet starts Methimazole, he/she will likely need to remain on the medication for the rest of his/her life in order to control hyperthyroidism. The goal is to use the lowest amount of medication necessary to control the condition. Methimazole can be given with or without food. Allow free access to water while taking this medication. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.

Precautions: Do not use Methimazole in pets who are hypersensitive (allergic) to it. This medication should be used with extreme caution in animals with anemia, clotting disorders, bleeding disorders, low white cell and platelet counts, or diseases of the immune system, liver, or kidney. Extreme caution should also be pregnant or lactating animals (females nursing their young). If the mother is receiving Methimazole, babies should be given milk replacer after they have received the colostrum (first milk immediately after birth). In addition to monitoring of thyroid hormone levels, laboratory tests to check liver and kidney function plus blood cell counts are typically run before starting treatment and then at recommended intervals thereafter. Your veterinarian will weigh risks vs. benefits of using this medication in your individual pet.

Storage: Store Methimazole tablets at room temperature in a tightly sealed container protected from light. Keep away from children and pets.

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Methimazole.

Comments about Methimazole (Generic of Tapazole):

Our cat has been on the Methimazole for about a year now for Hyper Thyroid. He was very thin with little before.

Q is ~18 yrs old and now looking like a much younger cat. I make a game with him to get his tablet before I give him food so he is eager to take his medicine. Just had bloodwork done and the Doc says it's perfect.

My cat gobbles his pill as long as it is inside a Greenie's pill pocket. He has to take one pill every 12 hours. He has a hyper active thyroid so this medication is essential to his healtlh.

Use the product for medical condition for an aged feline.

Seems to be helping her & the price is right, lot cheaper than at the Vet's office.

Since getting the meds from your company seems as though the product has changed somewhat. In the past the pills were able to be broken in half/quartered with a snap of your finger/s. Now, you need to use a knife/pill cutter to divide them.
