Product Details

Help your cat suffering from hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) with Methimazole. This medication helps control the condition which should help your cat to find relief from symptoms of thyroid disease so he/she can feel better.

What is Methimazole? A tablet that is given primarily to cats in order to control hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland). It is given orally (by mouth) as directed by your veterinarian. This medication is not a cure for the disease. It will, however, help to control the condition which should help minimize your cats symptoms.

Formulated for: dogs and cats but is used by veterinarians most commonly to treat hyperthyroidism in cats.

What results can I expect? Methimazole should help to decrease your hyperthyroid cats level of thyroid hormone. This should help to reduce your cats hyperthyroid symptoms including vomiting and weight loss. This should help your cat to feel better. It can take 1-4 weeks to see a decrease in the level of thyroid hormone produced by the body. This medication does not cure hyperthyroidism but it should help to control the condition and minimize symptoms. This medication usually needs to be given for your cat's lifetime in order to optimally control the disease.

What Form(s) does Methimazole come in? This medication comes in tablets that are given by mouth (orally).

Generic Name: Methimazole

Common Brand Name: Tapazole

Dose and Administration: This medication is given orally (by mouth). It is commonly given twice daily or every twelve hours although the exact dose and dosing frequency for your pet will be determined by your veterinarian. Always follow your veterinarians precise instructions regarding the use of Methimazole. If you do not understand the directions on the label, ask your veterinarian to explain them to you. The dose may be adjusted based on your pets response to treatment and based on thyroid monitoring. Once your pet starts Methimazole, he/she will likely need to remain on the medication for the rest of his/her life in order to control hyperthyroidism. The goal is to use the lowest amount of medication necessary to control the condition. Methimazole can be given with or without food. Allow free access to water while taking this medication. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.

Uses: Methimazole is primarily used to control hyperthyroidism in cats which is a condition that causes the thyroid gland to produce a higher than normal amount of thyroid hormone. Methimazole helps to treat hyperthyroidism by decreasing the production of thyroid hormone which helps control the condition. Methimazole is less commonly used in dogs to protect the kidneys while receiving cisplatin which is an anti-cancer drug.

These typically occur within the first two weeks of treatment and may eventually stop even with continuation of treatment. Less common side effects are yellowing of the gums, skin, or eyes (jaundice) which may signify liver problems. Itching of the face, scratching, or increased bleeding tendencies may occur. Treatment with may also unmask hidden kidney disease. Myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease that severely weakens muscles and may cause difficulty swallowing, may occur but is rare. Other side effects are also possible.

Comments about Methimazole (Generic of Tapazole):

Getting our cat to take a pill is not possible. We ended up dissolving it in a very small amount of water and then mixing it with a little tuna. A pill that is easier to crush would be ideal. But the med worked well.

Comments about Methimazole (Generic of Tapazole):

This is controling Kitty's hyperthyroidism. She is very old and has lost her appetite, but is eating better since being on this medication and has gained some weight back. She doesn't like taking pills, but tolerates the process. I would recommend this medication to anyone whose pet has this condition.

Comments about Methimazole (Generic of Tapazole):

This product is given twice a day. She's a very smart cat and has found her pill in her pill pockets so we have to grind it up and slip it into a little bit of wet food. She's still not happy about this. Always trying to find a better way to give her the doseage she needs.
