Product Information

Animax is: an ointment that is used topically (on the skin) to treat inflammation of the skin and ears caused by bacterial or yeast infections.

What outcomes can be expected?

Should kill the organisms responsible for skin/ear infections while relieving associated symptoms. It may take several days to see improvement in your pet’s condition but results may vary. If you are not noticing improvement in your pet’s condition once treatment has been completed, call your veterinarian for further advice.

Who is it for: dogs and cats.

How does it work? The combination of nystatin, neomycin, thiostrepton, and triamcinolone kills bacterial, fungus, and yeast that can cause infection on your pet’s skin or in his/her ear(s). Nystatin is an antifungal that also kills yeast. Neomycin and thiostrepton are antibiotics that work to kill susceptible bacteria that your pet may encounter on skin surfaces or in the ears. Triamcinolone is a corticosteroid that works to reduce the inflammation that can occur with local infection(s). This helps relieve itching and discomfort.

Animax is available as: an ointment.

Generic Name: Nystatin, neomycin, thiostrepton, triamcinolone (Common Drug Name)

Common Brand Name: Animax

Dose and Administration: Animax is used topically (on the skin/ears) as prescribed by a veterinarian. It should never be given by mouth. Make sure you clean and dry the treatment area well prior to applying ointment. If there is excess hair, it should be cut to allow for absorption directly on the skin or ears. Gently massage the prescribed amount of ointment on the infected area. If you miss a treatment, give it as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next treatment, skip the missed treatment and resume a normal schedule. Follow your veterinarian’s precise instructions regarding the use of this medication. Call your veterinarian immediately if you do not understand the instructions that have been given.

Storage: Store Animax at room temperature in the original packaging away from light and out of reach from children and pets.

Possible Side Effects: Most tolerated well. Some pets may be sensitive to neomycin which may result in redness or swelling at the medication site. Animax may also cause a loss of hearing or balance if the eardrum is not intact. If your pet accidentally ingests this medication internally or if it is given at high doses, side effects from the corticosteroid (triamcinolone) can occur. Symptoms of high doses of corticosteroids include: polyuria (increased urination), polydipsia (increased drinking), increased appetite, weight gain, panting, diarrhea, vomiting, and behavior changes.

Precautions: Your veterinarian should examine your pet's ear to make sure the eardrum is intact to ensure that this medication can be given safely. Make sure your veterinarian or veterinary staff shows you how to use this medication correctly. Do not use in animals with an allergy to any ingredients. Do not use to treat deep infections, puncture wounds, burns, or if pus. Corticosteroids, if given at high doses or for extended periods, can cause premature birth. In dogs, rabbits, and rodents, corticosteroids can cause birth defects. Animax may not be suitable for pregnant or nursing females. Never ingest this medication. Avoid contact with the eyes.

Drug and Food Interactions: Tell your veterinarian about all medications, vitamins, and supplements your pet is taking prior to starting therapy with Animax. Interactions may occur with other corticosteroids or gentamicin. There is an increased risk of stomach ulcers when corticosteroids are used with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, carprofen (Rimadyl), deracoxib (Deramaxx), or etodolac (EtoGesic).

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Animax.

        Comments about Animax Ointment:

We were prescribed this for a bacterial infection that caused my pet to scratch and bite himself incessantly. After 4 days use, we realized he was getting very hard of hearing, and after reading the package insert, we saw that hearing loss was a side effect(LIKELY temporary) I cannot find any information on what percentage of dogs don't get a return of hearing loss or why they lose their hearing. This is very distressing for our poor dog.

          Comments about Animax Ointment:

This product and other ear held have caused my dog to be temporarily deaf. His hearing will probably return in a few days. I used the gel for five days only. And then stopped for this reason.
