Product Details

Temaril-P is:an antihistamine (trimeprazine)/corticosteroid (prednisolone) combination. This combination helps to relieve common inflammatory disorders such as kennel cough (tracheobronchitis), bronchitis/coughs of nonspecific origin (except coughs due to cardiac insufficiencies), parasitic/bacterial infections, eczema, and canine allergies.

What are the benefits? 1. Scored tablets can be split easily and make it easy to give correct dose; 2. Unique antihistamine/corticosteroid combination; 3. Acts as an antitussive (relieves coughing) and as an antipruritic (relieves itching).

What outcomes can be expected? Temaril-P will not cure the underlying problem. Antihistamine (Trimeprazine) and steroid (Prednisolone) work well to relieve coughing and itching occuring with tracheobronchitis (kennel cough), canine allergies, and other causes.

Who is it for: Dogs.

How does it work? Trimeprazine blocks histamine in the body. Prednisolone reduces inflammation of the skin and respiratory system.

Temaril-P is available as: an oral tablet.

Generic Name: Trimeprazine (5mg) with Prednisolone (2mg) . No generic products are available. Compounded products may be available.

Common Brand Name: Temaril-P (Pfizer Animal Health)

Dose and administration: A prescription from your veterinarian is required in order to purchase this medication. The dose is usually based on dogs weight but dose and duration of treatment will be determined by your veterinarian. Temaril P should always be reduced gradually before stopping. Taking with food to lessens stomach upset. Make sure dog has continuous access to water while using. If you forget to give a dose, give it as soon as your remember. If it is too close to the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not double dose.

Uses: Temaril-P works to relieve inflammation. It targets inflammation of the respiratory tract and skin specifically. Coughing from allergic bronchitis, infections, or other causes, and itching/inflammation of the skin and ear due to allergies are all examples of problems that can be helped with this medication.

Storage: Temaril-P should be stored in a tight, childproof, light-resistant container at room temperature. Keep out of reach from children and pets.

Possible side effects: Side effects are usually dose dependent and may include sedation, exposed third eyelid, muscle tremors, weakness, blood disorders, and an increase in drinking, eating, and urinating. Your pet may have more "accidents" and need to relieve themselves more often. Less common side effects include increased appetite, weight gain, panting, diarrhea, vomiting, and behavior changes.

Muscle loss, weakness, and the development of diabetes or hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) may occur if this medication is used long-term. Longer term use of Temaril-P can also cause immune system suppression (especially at higher doses). Immune suppression can make a pet more susceptible to infection. Contact your veterinarian if your pet displays symptoms of infection.

If your pet is truly allergic to this medication, he/she can exhibit symptoms including facial swelling, hives, scratching, diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma.

Other side effects are possible. If side effects occur or if your pet is acting unusual in any way while taking this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately for further instructions. He/she may decrease the dosage or frequency of administration or discontinue this medication and/or recommend further treatment if there are medication-related problems.
Precautions:Certain conditions may be exacerbated by the administration of Temaril-P. Let your veterinarian know if your pet has any of the following problems: diabetes, stomach ulcers, Cushings disease, infection, heart, liver disease, kidney disease, or any other chronic condition. Do not use in pregnant or nursing dogs. Regular blood tests may be necessary if your pet is taking Temaril-P for prolonged periods. Long-term corticosteroid use may cause abnormal liver enzyme, thyroid hormone, cholesterol, and potassium elevations in the blood. Tell your veterinarian if your pet has any allergies to medications, specifically to antihistamines or corticosteroids.

Drug and Food Interactions: Tell your veterinarian about any other medications your pet is taking prior to using Temaril-P, including vitamins and supplements. The following drugs may interact with Temaril-P: organophosphates, procaine hydrochloride phenytoin, digitalis, epinephrine, phenobarbital, amphotericin B, rifampin cyclosporine, estrogens, erythromycin, mitotane, quinidine, sedatives, general anesthetics, pain medications, Pepto-Bismol, other antidiarrheal mixtures, and antacids. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, carprofen (Rimadyl), deracoxib (Deramaxx), or etodolac (EtoGesic) can increase the risk of gastrointestinal ulcers if they are given with Temaril-P. Insulin requirements may also increase in diabetic animals taking this medication.

A prescription from your veterinarian is necessary to purchase Temaril-P for your dog.

I have Brussels Griffons. This is the best for any allergies that may arise. I gave my dogs Benedryl for years, per my Vet. I kept asking if any side effects would arise. He assured me not to worry. It sorta controlled the itching and skin issues. Then her teeth began coming out, she went blind, and all the horrors in the world showed up. I changed Vets as I felt sure he would insist on putting her to sleep and I wasn't ready for that. She even had issues breathing. The new Vet considered it a challenge. She put her on Temaril-P and within just a week I saw a big difference and she thanked me. My dog thanked me. To this day, my dog is happier than she has been in years, the skin looked almost new again, and except for the blindness, you cannot tell she was ever so sick as to consider needing to be put down. She is almost 11 years old and full of life. This was what we needed a lot of years ago. I just had the wrong VET.

Comments about Temaril-P Tablets For Dogs:

This product works wonders for our dog!! After 1 1/2 yrs of shots, tests, etc..we discovered all types of things our dog is allergic to. A kennel owner told us she uses this for her dog, so we asked our vet, he knew nothing about it ( prob cause he wanted us to keep coming back to him !) We switched vets then and there, new vet has prescribed it for years for dogs w/severe allergies. It really cuts down on our dog's scratching.. We've used it for a few years, we'll continue to use it for her because it works well. One tablet a day is all she needs now.
