Product Information

Levothyroxine helps to supplement your pet with the hormone he/she needs in order to keep his/her hypothyroidism under control.

Levothyroxine is: an oral medication that is used to supplement thyroid hormone in pets who can’t produce enough on their own. This condition is known as hypothyroidism which is a common disease of middle and older dogs.

What are the benefits?

1.Generic;2.Effective;2.Comes in multiple strengths to accommodate your pet’s body weight;3.Helps supplement thyroid hormone in pets who are unable to produce it independently.

    What outcomes can be expected?

Levothyroxine replaces thyroid hormone in pets suffering from hypothyroidism. It helps to relieve symptoms but it is not a cure.

Thyroid hormone levels in the blood are required to make sure your pet receives the right amount of medication. Follow your veterinarian’s recommendations regarding blood testing.

It can take several weeks to notice a change in your pet. Once your pet is on the correct dose of Levothyroxine, he/she usually needs to take medication for life.

Who is it for: dogs and cats.

    How is it given?

1.Give all medication orally (by mouth) as directed by your veterinarian.

    2. Differences exist between brands. Do not change brands if possible unless your veterinarian recommends a change.

3.Give this medication only to the pet for whom it was prescribed.

    4. Call your veterinarian if you have any questions regarding the use of Levothyroxine.

How does it work? Levothyroxine mimics the hormone thyroxine that is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Levothyroxine works like thyroxine to maintain normal metabolism in the body.

Levothyroxine is available as: an oral tablet.

    Generic Name:Levothyroxine (Common Drug Name)

Common Brand Name:Soloxine (Virbac), Levotabs (Vetus), Synthroid (Knoll), Thyrosin (Vedco), Thyro-Tabs (Vet-a-Mix)

Dose and Administration:Give medication by mouth according to your veterinarian’s precise instructions.

Blood work is required at recommended intervals to make sure your pet is receiving the proper dose of medication.

If you miss a dose, give it as soon as your remember but never double dose.

Give Levothyroxine only to the pet it has been prescribed for.

Uses:Levothyroxine supplements hypothyroid pets with thyroid hormone that they are unable to produce on their own.

Storage:Store tablets at room temperature away from children and pets.

Possible Side Effects: No side effects have been reported when this medication is used at the correct dose.

Some pets can be truly allergic to Levothyroxine. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling, pale mucous membranes, shock, vomiting, and diarrhea.

If your pet is acting ill in any way once he/she receives Levothyroxine, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Precautions:Do not use in animals who are allergic to Levothyroxine.

Use with extreme caution in older or debilitated animals. This medication should also be used cautiously in dogs and cats with heart disease, high blood pressure, Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism), or diabetes.

Do not use in animals with hyperthyroidism which is a condition in which the body produces too much thyroid hormone.

Drug and Food Interactions: Always tell your veterinarian about other medications or supplements your pet is taking prior to starting Levothyroxine. Let your veterinarian know if your pet is taking epinephrine, norepinephrine, insulin, estrogens, warfarin, or digoxin since interactions may occur.

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Levothryroxine.
