Heartgard Plus is: a heartworm preventative and worming medication. It contains Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate. These active ingredients prevent heartworm infection in dogs plus they are effective in controlling and treating certain intestinal parasites (roundworms and hookworms).

How is it given?

1. Give one chewable tablet given by mouth on a monthly basis.

2. A small blood test to check for heartworm disease is required prior to starting this medication. Your veterinarian can run this test in the office.

3. Retesting may also be needed if more than one monthly treatment has been missed.

4. Never double dose.

5. Heartgard Plus should be chewed and should never be given to any dog other than the one it has been prescribed for.

How does it work? Heartgard Plus prevents adult heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection in dogs, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. It also works to control and treat hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, A. brasiliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala) and roundworms (ascarids - Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina) which are intestinal parasites that can cause illness in dogs and humans. The two active ingredients are Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate which cause an interruption in the parasite's nerve transmission, causing paralysis and death of immature heartworms (larvae) and intestinal worms.

Heartgard Plus for Dogs 51-100 lbs. (large dogs) is available as: a chewable tablet containing beef flavoring.

Generic Name: Ivermectin, Pyrantel Pamoate. Tri-heart Plus is a branded, generic alternative.

Dose and Administration: Heartgard Plus is given once a month as a chewable tablet based on your dog’s body weight. Each tablet should be chewed or broken into pieces.

Administer Heartgard Plus only to the dog for which it has been prescribed for. If you skip more than one dose of medication, contact your veterinarian as retesting may be necessary. Never give two doses at once.

The efficacy of the drug may be reduced if the interval between doses is longer than one month.

Storage: Keep Heartgard Plus at room temperature out of reach from children and pets.

Possible Side Effects: Heartgard Plus is usually tolerated very well and side effects are very rare. Possible side effects may include vomiting and diarrhea. Higher doses may cause incoordination, convulsions, or drooling. Call your veterinarian immediately if any side effects are observed.

Precautions: Use Heartgard Plus cautiously in Collies and other herding breeds. Observe your pet for at least 8 hours if he/she is one of these breeds. Look for signs of weakness, staggering, dilated pupils, trembling, drooling, or head pressing. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog exhibits any of these symptoms.

This medication should not be given to puppies under 6 weeks of age.

All dogs should be tested for heartworm disease prior to starting Heartgard Plus. Check with your veterinarian regarding his/her testing recommendations.

Drug and Food Interactions: There have been no reported drug or food interactions with this medication. You should always tell your veterinarian about any other medications, vitamins, or supplements your dog is taking prior to starting Heartgard Plus since interactions are always a possibility.
