Keep your cat safe and protected from heartworm disease and hookworms with Heartgard.

What is Heartgard for Cats? Heartgard is a heartworm preventative that kills feline heartworms and helps to control and treat hookworms. This medication is typically given once a month.

Formulated for: cats and kittens. It is not recommended to give Heartgard to kitten less than 6 weeks of age. It is considered safe to use in pregnant and nursing cats.

How is this medication given? Heartgard for Cats should be given monthly for optimal effectiveness. Try to remember to give this medication on the same day every month if possible. Many veterinarians advise giving Heartgard year round. Depending on your cats risk factors for heartworm disease, your veterinarian may recommend treatment only during the mosquito season. If given seasonally, start giving medication within 30 days of the cat's first exposure to mosquitoes. The last dose needs to be given within 30 days after the cat's last exposure to mosquitoes. Ask your veterinarian regarding his/her recommendations.

Heartgard for Cats is generally taken as a treat. Tablets need to be chewed so break tablets into small pieces and administer if your cat has a tendency to swallow without chewing. Make sure food is available during the day of treatment. Each tablet may not be absorbed well if it is swallowed whole or if a portion of it is not swallowed so it is important that your cat takes the entire dose. If you notice that your cat does not ingest the entire tablet, it is generally recommended to give another full dose as soon as possible. If you have trouble giving Heartgard to your cat, contact your veterinarian for further instructions.

How does this medication work? Heartgard causes interference in the nerve transmission of heartworms and hookworms. This results in paralysis and death of immature heartworms and hookworms. Killing heartworms and hookworms in their immature stage prevents the adults which are responsible for illness from developing. The active ingredient that is responsible for this is Ivermectin which is a worming medication that helps prevent heartworm and some types of intestinal parasites.

What results can I expect? Adult heartworms and hookworms should be prevented by killing these parasites in their immature stage. This should keep your cat protected from feline heartworm disease and hookworms.

What Form(s) does Heartgard come in? Heartgard is available for cats in a tablet that is chewable. You can purchase this preventative in a 6 month or 12 month supply.

Generic Name: Ivermectin

Common Brand Name: Heartgard Chewables for Cats (Merial)

Dose and Administration: It is recommended by the American Heartworm Society that heartworm prevention be used year round although you should check with your veterinarian for his/her recommendations.

This medication is given one time per month as is given orally. Tablets are chewable and should be chewed and should not be swallowed whole. Most cats will accepts this medication as a treat. If your cat has a tendency to swallow his/her food or treats whole, you can break each tablet into small pieces. Make sure your cat has food available on the day of treatment. Check to make sure your cat swallows the complete dose. If not, give another pill as soon as you remember.

If you are late on your cats monthly dose, this medication may not be optimally effective. If more than one monthly dose has been missed, do not restart this medication until you speak with your veterinarian. Contact your veterinarian if you have trouble giving this medication. This medication should only be given to the pet for which it was prescribed.

This item is a great replacement option for Interceptor, which has been discontinued by the manufacturer
