Product Information

Soloxine is a medication that provides thyroid hormone replacement in pets suffering from hypothyroidism which is a condition where he/she is unable to produce a normal amount of thyroid hormone. This condition is common in middle age to older dogs and can cause symptoms such as lack of energy and weight gain.

What is Soloxine? Soloxine is a medication prescribed by your veterinarian to treat and control hypothyroidism. It contains the synthetic hormone levothyroxine which helps to supplement hormones normally produced by the thyroid gland.

Soloxine is formulated for: dogs and cats although hypothyroidism is more common in middle age to older dogs. Veterinarians sometimes prescribe this medication for birds.

What are the benefits of Soloxine? Soloxine is a medical option to help replace thyroid hormone in pets that suffer from hypothyroidism since they cannot produce these hormones on their own. It comes in multiple concentrations for accurate dosing. Tablets are easy to administer.

How does Soloxine work? The active ingredient in Soloxine is levothyroxine. Levothyroxine acts similar to the hormone thyroxine, which is produced naturally by the thyroid gland. Pets with hypothyroidism cannot produce these hormones on their own. Soloxine works like thyroxine to maintain normal metabolism in the body.

How is Soloxine administered? Your veterinarian will determine the dosage of Soloxine for your pet. This medication is given by mouth (orally) in dogs and cats. Some birds may require this medication in the drinking water. Give this medication with plenty of water. It may also be given with food. Differences exist between brands. Do not change brands if possible. If there is a need to change, your veterinarian may need to recheck thyroid hormone levels and adjust dose if indicated. Routine blood testing periodically as directed by your veterinarian is also typically necessary to monitor thyroid function and to adjust the medication dosage as necessary. Soloxine should only be given to the pet for which it was prescribed.

What results can I expect? Soloxine works to replace thyroid hormones that the body should normally produce. It is not a cure for hypothyroidism but it is often effective in relieving symptoms. Every pet reacts differently to this medication. Your veterinarian may monitor thyroid hormone levels in the blood every 2-4 weeks until the ideal dosage has been determined. Periodic testing as directed by your veterinarian is also necessary while your pet is taking Soloxine. It can take several weeks of treatment to see results. Your pet will likely need to take Soloxine or a similar thyroid supplement for life in order to keep his/her thyroid condition under control.

What Form(s) does Soloxine come in? Soloxine is a tablet that is given by mouth (orally). 0.1 mg to 1 mg concentrations are available allowing for the most accurate dosing for your pet.

Common Brand Name: Soloxine

Generic Name: Levothyroxine (Common Drug Name)

Uses: Soloxine is used in the treatment of hypothyroidism which causes the thyroid gland to produce an inadequate amount of thyroid hormone. Soloxine contains Levothyroxine which helps to replace the hormones that pets with hypothyroidism cannot produce on their own.

Dose and Administration: Soloxine is given by mouth (orally) to dogs and cats. Birds can take this medication in their drinking water as directed by a veterinarian. This medication should be given with plenty of water and can be given with food. The dosage of Soloxine is different for each pet and is also based on body weight. Your veterinarian will determine the dosage of this medication that is best for your pet. Twice a day dosing is common but your veterinarian will tell you what is right for your pet. If you miss a dose of medication, give it as soon as you remember.

If it time for the next scheduled dose, do not give two doses at once. Always contact your veterinarian if you are unsure of how to give this medication correctly. Blood testing is required every 2-4 weeks until the ideal dosage for your pet has been determined. Periodic blood tests to monitor thyroid hormone are commonly necessary as directed by your veterinarian.

Possible Side Effects: Soloxine is generally safe if it is given at the correct dose. Rarely, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can occur. Signs of an allergic reaction to this medication include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If your pet displays any unusual symptoms once he/she has started taking Soloxine, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Precautions: Soloxine should not be used in animals hypersensitive (allergic) to it. It should also be used with extreme caution in older or debilitated animals, or in animals with heart disease, high blood pressure, Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism), or diabetes. Soloxine should never be used in pets suffering from hyperthyroidism which is a condition in which the body produces too much thyroid hormone.

Drug and Food Interactions: Tell your veterinarian about any medications, supplements, or vitamins your pet is taking before starting Soloxine. Certain medications including antidepressants, sucralfate (Carafate), and aluminum antacids (Maalox, Mylanta) may affect the action of Soloxine or cause problems. Other drug interactions may also occur. If you are not sure if your pet’s medication can be safely given with Soloxine, contact your veterinarian for further information.

Storage: Store Soloxine at room temperature in a tight, light-resistant, childproof container. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Soloxine.

I bought this, the brand name thyroid med, at 1/14th what my vet was charging me. At 2 pills/day for the rest of my dog's life, that works out to about $4/month vs $56/month. And my vet was selling the generic version.

inexpensive but hard to swallow. after prescription runs out I'll probably go back to the Tasty Tabs I get from my Vet. unless the flavored tablets become available here.

Small pill size so its easy to administer. I put the pill right into my dogs food and she doesnt even notice. So small, would probably be easy to give to smaller dogs too.
