Product Information

Atopica is a good option commonly recommended by veterinarians in order to bring relief to dogs that suffer from atopic dermatitis (allergies) and related skin conditions. Atopica treats the root of your dog’s allergic problems with fewer side effects than other forms of treatment such as steroids.

What is Atopica? Atopica is a soft oral capsule used to treat atopic dermatitis (allergies) and related skin conditions in dogs. Allergies can occur when sensitive dogs come in contact with or inhale common allergens such as dust mites, pollens, and molds, which then stimulate the immune system to generate an allergic reaction.

Atopica is formulated for: dogs over 4 lbs. Safety has not been established in dogs under 6 months of age. Although Atopica is labeled only for dogs, some veterinarians may prescribe it for cats.

What are the benefits of Atopica? Atopica directly targets the cause of your dog’s atopic dermatitis and relieves allergy symptoms such as gnawing and scratching which also reduces skin lesions. This medication is FDA approved and has been proven to be effective and safe for long-term use. Atopica is easy to administer in a convenient daily dose.

How does Atopica work? Atopica targets skin allergies where they start by targeting the immune cells involved in an allergic reaction.

How is Atopica administered? Do not remove capsule from blister pack until you are ready to use it. Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. It is recommended to give Atopica 1-2 hours before meals and without food. Do not sprinkle contents of the capsule on food as there is a bitter taste. Your veterinarian may reduce your dog’s dose after several weeks of treatment. If your dog’s allergies are seasonal, it is recommended to start Atopica 1-2 months before his/her allergy season.

What results can I expect? Symptoms of your dog’s allergies should subside and he/she should be more comfortable. Be patients as it may take several weeks for Atopica to take effect but results vary from dog to dog.

What Form(s) does Atopica come in? Atopica is manufactured as a capsule.

Common Brand Name: Atopica (Novartis)

Generic Name: Cyclosporine (Common Drug Name)

Uses: Atopica is used for the treatment of allergic dermatitis (allergies) and related skin conditions in dogs.

Dose and Administration: Give Atopica exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Your dog’s dose may be reduced after several weeks of treatment. Give this medication without food, ideally 1-2 hours before meals. Do not open capsule and do not sprinkle contents on food as there is a bitter taste. Keep capsules in blister pack until you are ready to use them. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next scheduled dose, skip the dose. Do not double dose. Your veterinarian may recommend blood tests in order to monitor the safety and efficacy of Atopica. Ask your veterinarian what his/her policy is regarding blood monitoring.

Possible Side Effects: Gastrointestinal side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and lack of appetite have been reported. Other less common side effects include muscle cramps, muscle weakness, and change in hair coat. Signs of an allergic reaction include facial swelling, difficulty breathing, hives, scratching, vomiting, diarrhea, and pale gums. Atopica can suppress the immune system at high doses causing your pet to be more susceptible to infection. Other side effects may occur. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet displays any unusual symptoms while taking Atopica.

Precautions: Do not use in animals that are allergic to cyclosporine. Use this medication with caution in dogs with liver and kidney disease. Do not use in dogs with a history of cancer. It is not recommended to give Atopica to breeding or nursing dogs unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Discuss this with your veterinarian. The safety of Atopica has not been evaluated in dogs under 6 months of age.

Drug and Food Interactions: There are many possible drug/food interactions that can occur with Atopica. Tell your veterinarian about any vitamins, supplements, or medications your dog is taking before starting Atopica. Possible interactions can occur with digoxin, etoposide, corticosteroids, amiodarone, androgens (testosterone), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), erythromycin, calcium channel blockers (diltiazem), corticosteroids, metoclopramide, rimethoprim/sulfa, rifampin, phenobarbital, phenytoin, terbinafine, probucol, omeprazole, aminoglycosides (e.g., gentamicin). amphotericin, and modified live vaccines. Vaccinations may be less effective when given to animals receiving Atopica. The manufacturer recommends using only killed vaccines in animals taking Atopica. Discuss this with your veterinarian.

Storage: Store Atopica at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Atopica.

Atopica has given our Boxer, Rocco such relief. We were at a standstill with what to do next for him. We tried everything we possibly could - and he only got temporary relief. We have been giving him Atopica for 5 weeks now and each day we see such great results. My heart use to break seeing Rocco itch, bite and scratch all the time. Now he very rarely does. This has proven to be a great product for us. If you have a dog with allergies and is in agony, try Atopica - you will be amazed.

[$] for fifteen doses, what a waste of money. I truly hope that this medication works for some dogs but my dog had a terrible reaction to it. I waited a couple of days after stopping the Prednisolone ( that works well for my dog.) But I can not continue the Pred. because of long term effects. About 15 minutes after giving my dog the Atopica she was itching like never before, it was terrible and scary. I gave it a good try, dosed her for 2 days and got the same results. I waited 2 days and tried again. Same results, my dog was rolling all over the floor and on her back squirming trying to relieve the itching. When I gently touched her to try to comfort her she would actually tremble. Thankfully these effects subsided after a couple of hours but it is not worth trying again to put her through this ordeal and have no helpful results. I guess I can't say Atopica doesn't work for some dogs. Just Not My Dog.

Comments about Atopica Cyclosporine Capsules For Dogs:

Atopica is the only product we've found to successfully relieve our Shih Tzu's skin problems due to severe allergies without serious negative effects (such as with steroids). Because it is smelly and tastes bad, just put in a dab of peanut butter and he swallows it down! Costly, but worth every penny to avoid skin hotspots, relieve itching, prevent hair loss, etc. Greatly improves his quality of life...and ours, too!!

Comments about Atopica Cyclosporine Capsules For Dogs:

The pills are very large, so I have to mold a large Pill Pocket around it. We also have to give some Prednisone steroid occasionally if allergies are really bad. But at least she's off the steroids on a daily basis, has lost all of the steroid weight, and is not nearly as itchy as before the medication began 3 years ago.
