Product Information

Iverhart Plus for Small Dogs works well to prevent heartworm disease, roundworms, and hookworms in your dog. One pill once a month is all it takes to keep your dog protected. This medication is FDA approved and veterinarian recommended. It is the generic alternative to Heartgard Plus so keeping your dog protected is also more affordable.

What is Iverhart Plus?Iverhart Plus is one generic alternative to Heartgard Plus. It is a three-way preventative that kills immature heartworms (larvae). This medication also controls and treats roundworms and hookworms which are common intestinal parasites that can cause illness in humans and pets.

Iverhart Plus is formulated for: Dogs and puppies over 6 weeks of age can take Iverhart Plus safely. Pregnant and breeding females can also be given this medication as necessary .

What are the benefits of Iverhart Plus? Iverhart Plus is a generic medication so it contains the same ingredients as name-brand Heartgard Plus but it is more economical to purchase. The active ingredients (Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate) work to kill immature heartworms (larvae) while working to control and treat roundworms and hookworms (intestinal parasites). Chewable tablets given once a month makes it easy to give this medication to most dogs. This medication is flavored with pork and liver so it is a safe option for dogs who suffer from allergies to beef.

How does Iverhart Plus work? Iverhart Plus works by causing paralysis and eventual death of targeted parasites. The two active ingredients (Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate) work to kill immature heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms. Ivermectin eliminates the larval (immature) stage of the heartworm(Dirofilaria immitus) while Pyrantel pamoate works to effectively treat and control common intestinal parasites (hookworms- Ancylostoma caninum, A. brasiliense, Uncinaria stenocephala and roundworms- Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina).

How is Iverhart Plus administered? Give this medication orally(by mouth) once a month to prevent heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms in your dog. Tablets can be chewed. Most dogs take each tablet as a treat but they can also be crumbled in food or given directly into your dog’s mouth. It is not unusual for some dogs to occasionally spit out a tablet after it is given so always observe your dog carefully to make sure he/she has swallowed the entire dose. If your dog does spit out a tablet, give another one immediately. Iverhart Plus is generally given once a month (every 30 days) but always follow your veterinarian’s instructions. Most veterinarians recommend using this medication once a month year-round but it is also acceptable to give this medication seasonally during mosquito season. If you use this medication seasonally, be sure to give the first dose within 30 days of the dog's first exposure to mosquitoes and make sure you give the last dose within 30 days after the dog's last mosquito exposure. Each tablet works to kill parasites acquired during the previous month. Speak with your veterinarian regarding the frequency of administration. Many vets will recommend year round dosing but this may vary. If using this medication seasonally, heartworm testing may be necessary before giving a new dose. Your veterinarian can discuss testing protocols with you. Follow your veterinarian’s directions regarding the use of Iverhart Plus. This medication should be given only to the pet that it was prescribed for. Always give the entire dose of Iverhart Plus. Do not split tablets. If you do not understand how to use this medication correctly, contact your veterinarian..

What results can I expect? Each tablet will protect your dog for one month. Iverhart Plus is effective in killing immature heartworms before they have the chance to develop into adults that can cause illness in your dog. It is also effective in controlling and treating Hookworms and Roundworms.

Common Brand Name: Iverhart Plus (Virbac) ).

Generic Name: Ivermectin and pyrantel Pamoate (Commmon Drug Name). These ingredients are the same as what is in Heartgard Plus).

Possible Side Effects: Most dogs tolerate Iverhart Plus well if it is given at the recommended dose. Side effects can sometimes occur and include vomiting, diarrhea, incoordination, convulsions, and drooling. Some dogs can be truly allergic to this medication or to the parasites dying off. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, and coma. If you notice any of these signs, call your vet or the local veterinary emergency center as this requires immediate treatment. Ivermectin sensitivity is more common when higher doses are given but it is important to discuss the safety of this medication with your veterinarian if you own one of these breeds of dog. The purpose of testing before starting Iverhart Plus is to make sure your dog is free of disease and to ensure that he/she can take this medication safely. Your veterinarian will discuss the frequency of testing that is right for your dog. Ask your veterinarian about other measures you can take to prevent intestinal parasites in your dog and you in addition to giving Iverhart Plus regularly.
