Product Information

What is Iverhart Plus? This is a preventative medication given monthly in order to protect against heartworm disease, roundworms, and hookworms. It is also a treatment option for roundworms and hookworms. This is a generic substitute for Heartgard Plus that contains Ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate.

Iverhart Plus is formulated for: Dogs and puppies can take Iverhart Plus. All dogs and puppies must be over 6 weeks of age in order to take this medication safely. This medication has been proven safe for pregnant/breeding females.

What are the benefits of Iverhart Plus? Iverhart Plus contains the same ingredients as Heartgard Plus(Ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate) but it is a generic brand so it is more economical. It provides three way protection against heartworm disease, roundworms, and hookworms. Tablets are chewable plus they contain pork and liver flavoring so they are easy to administer and they are also a safe alternative for dogs that are allergic to beef since other comparable preventatives often contain this ingredient. Dosing is an easy and convenient way to keep your dog protected since tablets only need to be given once a month.

How does Iverhart Plus work? Ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate are the primary ingredients in Iverhart Plus. Ivermectin kills immature heartworms (larvae) by inducing paralysis. This stops heartworm development before maturation preventing worms from developing into adults that can cause sickness in your dog. Pyrantel pamoate works similarly. This ingredient also causes paralysis and eventual death. It targets roundworms and hookworms so your dog is protected from these common intestinal parasites.

What results can I expect? This medication should protect your dog from heartworms that he/she was exposed to in the preceding month. It kills heartworm larvae. This should prevent adult heartworms from developing. Each dose of medication is also effective in controlling and treating intestinal parasites(roundworms and hookworms).

What form(s) does Iverhart Plus come in? This medication is a chewable tablet that is given by mouth. It contains pork-liver flavoring. This dose of medication is formulated for dogs weighing 26-50 lbs.

Common Brand Name: Iverhart Plus (Virbac).

Generic Name: Ivermectin and pyrantel Pamoate (Commmon Drug Name). These are the same active ingredients that are in Heartgard Plus.

Uses: Iverhart Plus is used as a preventative medication. It protects against heartworm disease in dogs and also works to control and treat common intestinal parasites (hookworms- Ancylostoma caninum, A. brasiliense, Uncinaria stenocephala and roundworms- Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina).

Dose and Administration: This medication comes in tablets that are given by mouth (orally) every 30 days. It can be given monthly year-round or seasonally. Speak to your veterinarian regarding the frequency of dosing. Give each tablet on the same day every month. Tablets can be chewed, crumbled and mixed with food, or given directly by mouth. Closely monitor your dog after giving each dose to make sure he/she has swallowed the medication. If your dog spits the medication out, another dose of medication can be given immediately. Keep each tablet in the packaging until you are ready to give it. If you forget to give a dose of Iverhart Plus, give it as soon as you remember and resume a monthly dosing schedule thereafter. If more than one monthly dose has been missed, further heartworm testing may be necessary before you can restart medication so speak with your veterinarian before you give another dose. This medication is available in various sizes based on your dog’s body weight.

  • More economical alternative to Heartgard Plus but contains the same ingredients (Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate).
  • Good option for broad-spectrum protection since Iverhart Plus works to kill immature heartworms and works to control and prevent roundworms and hookworms which are common intestinal parasites that can infect your dog.
  • Tablets are chewable and flavored so most dogs like the taste allowing for easy administration.
  • Pork and liver flavoring makes this medication a safe option for dogs who have beef allergies since other similar medications contain this ingredient.

Possible Side Effects: Side effects are rare if this medication is given properly as directed by your veterinarian. Vomiting and diarrhea can occur but this is uncommon. Problems including incoordination, convulsions, and drooling have been occasionally reported but these side effects are also uncommon. Some dogs are allergic to the ingredients in this medication. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If you observe any of these signs, this can be an emergency so call your veterinarian or local veterinary emergency hospital immediately. If your dog is acting unusual in any way after a dose of Iverhart Plus has been given, contact your veterinarian immediately for further instructions and advice.

Drug and Food Interactions: No drug or food interactions have been reported. Make sure you tell your veterinarian about any medications, vitamins, or supplements your dog is taking before giving him/her Iverhart Plus. If your dog has taken any other preventative medications, make sure you also discuss this with your veterinarian before giving any doses of this medication.

Precautions: This medication should not be given to any puppies less than 6 weeks of age. Comments about Iverhart Plus for Medium Dogs:

Use every month. Prevents heartworms. Simple as that. This is a good alternative to the higher priced Heartgard Plus.
