Product Information

Feel better knowing that your dog with arthritis and joint pain is on his/her way back to normal activity and quality of life with Previcox.

What is Previcox? Previcox is a coxib class non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication that your veterinarian may prescribe in order to provide relief from pain and inflammation associated with many types of joint abnormalities including arthritis in dogs.

What are the benefits of Previcox?

1. Helps provide relief from arthritis in dogs while maintaining normal body function.
2. Previcox can decrease pain associated with soft tissue and orthopedic surgery.
3. Rapid results are often observed.
4. Flavored tablets are chewable helping to make it easier to give to your pet.
5. Formulated for: dogs who weigh more than 12.5 lbs.

How is this medication given? Previcox is given by mouth (orally). Giving this medication with food can reduce the chance of stomach/intestinal side effects but giving without food is also acceptable. This medication is labeled for once a day use but you should always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. Contact your veterinarian if it becomes difficult to administer Previcox to your dog. Only give this drug to the pet for which it was prescribed. If your dog is to be given Previcox long-term, try to give the minimum dose necessary in order to relieve symptoms.

How does this medication work?
Previcox is a COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2) inhibiting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication. COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2) enzymes generate chemicals that are responsible for pain and inflammation in the joints and other places in the body. Previcox also works to spare the COX-1 (cyclooxygenase-1) enzyme which helps to maintain normal body function.

What results can I expect? Previcox helps relieve the symptoms associated with arthritis and other joint abnormalities. Since there is no cure for arthritis, Previcox can help reduce the inflammation that causes musculoskeletal (bone, muscle, and joint) pain in your dog which may help improve your dog's mobility. Post-surgical pain can also be minimized. Responses vary from dog to dog but most dogs will show evidence of improvement within days. If Previcox is discontinued or administered incorrectly, your dog’s pain and inflammation may return.

What Form(s) does Previcox come in? Previcox is available in 57mg and 227mg sizes. Tablets are chewable with scoring in the center in case they need to be split.

Dose and Administration: Previcox is a chewable, scored tablet that is available in 57 mg and 227 mg strengths and is given orally (by mouth). Tablets are scored so they can be split if necessary. Based on your pet's weight, your veterinarian will calculate the correct dosage and advise you about how to administer it. It is recommended to give this medication once daily but follow your veterinarian's recommendations precisely. Previcox can be given with or without food but giving with food can help decrease the risk of gastrointestinal upset (vomiting/diarrhea). Most dogs will take PREVICOX Chewable Tablets from your hand, but you can also place the tablet directly into your dog's mouth.

If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once. Uses: Previcox is used to treat arthritis in dogs and other forms of joint pain and inflammation. Previcox can also help relieve inflammation and pain associated with soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery.

Possible Side Effects: Previcox is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID) that may cause some side effects. Serious side effects associated with Previcox in dogs can occur with or without warning, and, in rare situations, can result in death.

The most common side effects associated with this medication involve the digestive tract (vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased food consumption). Liver and kidney problems have also been reported with the use of NSAIDs. Symptoms that may indicate your dog is having a problem with Previcox include a decrease or increase in appetite, vomiting, change in bowel movements (such as diarrhea, or black, tarry or bloody stools, change in behavior (such as decreased or increased activity level, lack of coordination, seizure, or aggression), yellowing of gums, skin, or whites of the eyes (jaundice), change in drinking habits (frequency or amount consumed), change in urination habits (frequency, color, or smell), and unexpected weight loss. If your pet experiences an allergic reaction contact your veterinarian.

A prescription from your veterinarian is necessary to purchase Previcox for your dog.

I am very concerned about the use of Previcox in our dog population without the follow up on it's adverse effects. Although it is effective for inflammation due to arthritis, it often makes the dog extremly hungry 24/7 and it has elevated my dog's liver enzymes to 300. My dog has lost weight and I am concerned about the future of her liver recovery. I am taking her off of Previcox immediately. I think I am killing her. There must be another, more safe way to bring her comfort and pain free.

My 11 year old beagle could barely walk for weeks. The vet gave us the pills to try and with in 8 hrs he was running and playing which he has not done for months. He has a new lease on life.

We give one pill to our dog daily with a meal. He does not have any difficulty consuming it; it does not seem to have negative side effects for him either. He does seem a little bit better about moving around -- not as stiff and uncomfortable.

Without previcox, I dont think my 17 yr old dog would or could go for walks. He has arthritis in his front legs and when we run out of our rx for a few days, we notice his drastic limps. Thank you National Pet Pharmacy for speedy deliveries!

I give my older dog a pill a day. It is easier for her to get up taking the pill. She seems happier and more alive. It is not a cure all but it definitely improves her quality of life.
