Product Information

If your pet suffers from coccidiosis (a protozoal infection of the intestinal tract) or certain bacterial infections, Albon should help to resolve the problem.

Albon is: an antibiotic medication that is prescribed as an antiprotozoal for the treatment of coccidiosis. It is also used in the treatment of other susceptible bacterial infections.

What are the benefits?

1.Treats coccidiosis and other bacterial infections;2.Can be used in dogs and cats;3.Generally easy to administer and well-tolerated.

    What outcomes can be expected?

Albon can work locally in the digestive tract but it is well absorbed by the digestive tract and can be distributed to multiple organs where susceptible bacterial infection is present. Always finish the entire medication or infection can recur or worsen. Infection should resolve after the treatment is completed. If your pet still appears ill, always consult with your veterinarian.

Who is it for: Albon is labeled for dogs and cats but veterinarians may also prescribe it in other animal species.

    How is it given?

    1. Give Albon by mouth. It can be given with food.2. Always follow your veterinarian’s prescribed instructions and finish the entire course of medication even if your pet starts to feel better sooner.

    3. Be sure your pet has unlimited access to water and that he/she drinks an ample amount to prevent crystal formation in his/her urine.

4.If you do not understand how to give Albon properly, always consult with your veterinarian.

How does it work? Albon stops folic acid production in bacteria and coccidia. Without folic acid, susceptible bacteria and coccidia are unable to produce essential proteins which will eventually lead to the death of these organisms.

Albon is available as: a liquid suspension with custard flavoring. It is also available as a tablet in various strengths.

    Generic Name:Sulfadimethoxine(Common Drug Name)

    Common Brand Name:Albon

Dose and Administration:Give Albon exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. If you miss a dose, give it soon as you remember but never give two doses at once. Finish the entire course of Albon or infection may return or worsen. Call your veterinarian if you have questions about how to use Albon.

Uses:Albon is used to treat coccidiosis (a protozoal infection) and other susceptible bacterial infections.

Storage:Store at room temperature away from light and out of reach from children and pets.

Possible Side Effects: Sulfa crystals in the urine can occur in pets taking Albon but this should not cause illness if your pet is hydrated well. Dry eye or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is possible in pets taking Albon long-term. If your pet’s eyes appear red, inflamed, or infected, stop this medication and call your veterinarian.

Side effects including anemia, lethargy, fever, kidney damage, and skin rash are possible but uncommon. Other side effects may occur. If your pet appears ill in any way while taking Albon, call your veterinarian immediately.

Precautions:Pets who are allergic to Albon or other sulfa medications should not take this medication. Do not use in pets who are dehydrated. Animals with bladder/kidney stones, liver disease, kidney disease, or pregnant/nursing females should be given Albon with extreme caution only when the benefits outweigh the risks under your veterinarian’s direct supervision

Drug and Food Interactions: Tell your veterinarian about all medications and supplements your pet is taking including antacids since some drug interactions may occur.

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Albon.
