Product Details

Get your pet treatment for his/her infection with Clavamox. Many veterinarians prescribe Clavamox because it is generally safe and effective.

What is Clavamox? Clavamox is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is effective in the treatment of infections of the skin, respiratory tract, and urinary tract. Clavamox can also treat in infected wounds and abscesses.

Formulated for: Cats and dogs can generally take Clavamox safely.

How is this medication given? Clavamox can be given by mouth (orally). Follow your veterinarians instructions precisely although twice daily dosing is common with Clavamox. Only give this medication to the pet for which it has been prescribed. Your pet may start to feel better before a course of medication has been completed. Always use all of the pills that were prescribed in order to prevent reoccurrence of infection or antibiotic resistance.

How does this medication work? Clavamox is a combination antibiotic that contains amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. These medications working together expand the spectrum of bacteria Clavamox is effective in fighting.

What results can I expect? Your pets infection should start to improve once the antibiotic starts working. His/her symptoms should resolve and you should see your pet return to normal. You can notice improvement before the entire course of antibiotic is completed but you should always make sure your pet completes the entire course to make sure the infection does not return and to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

What Form(s) does Clavamox come in? Clavamox can be given as a tablet available in 3 different strengths or as an oral suspension.

Generic Name: Amoxicillin-potassium clavulanate (Common Drug Name)

Common Brand Name: Clavamox (Pfizer Animal Health)

Dose and Administration: Generally, Clavamox is given twice daily. The exact dose and duration of treatment will be determined by your veterinarian so follow his/her instructions. The duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and the development of any adverse effects. Always complete the prescription unless specifically directed by your veterinarian. Even if your pet feels better, the entire treatment plan should be completed to prevent relapse or prevent the development of resistance. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, skip the one you missed. Do not double dose.

Uses: Clavamox is used to treat susceptible bacteria that cause infections in regions of the body including the skin, respiratory tract, bone, and mouth. Clavamox can also be effective in treating infected wounds. Clavamox is not a treatment for viral or parasitic infections.

Possible Side Effects: Clavamox is generally safe. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal in nature and include vomiting, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include shortness of breath, hives, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, rash, or collapse. Other less serious side effect such as a yeast or fungal infection may be more likely to occur. Contact your veterinarian immediately if any unusual symptoms develop while your pet is taking Clavamox.

Drug and Food Interactions: Tell your veterinarian about any vitamins, supplements, or medications your pet is taking before starting Clavamox. Interactions may occur with bacteriostatic drugs such as erythromycin or tetracyclines.
  • Can be given as a pill or as a liquid allowing you and your veterinarian to choose what would be easiest to administer.
  • Generally safe and effective in treating many types of infections that can affect your pet.
  • A combination antibiotic that has the ability to treat gram-positive, gram-negative, and anaerobic infections.

Precautions: Do not give. Clavamox to animals who are hypersensitive (allergic) to penicillins or beta-lactam antibiotics such as cephalosporins. Amoxicillin can cross the placenta so the safe use of Clavamox in pregnant or breeding animals has not been determined. Do not use amoxicillin in rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters or other rodents since it will affect the normal bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and possibly cause fatal diarrhea. Clavamox should be used with caution in very small animals that may be dehydrated or have kidney or heart disorders.

Storage: Clavamox tablets can be stored at room temperature in a tight, light-resistant, childproof container. Once the oral suspension is reconstituted (the powder is mixed with water), it should be stored in the refrigerator and used within 10 days. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Clavamox.

I can't comment on the effectiveness of the product. My 6 pound pomeranian is taking it because she has an infection in her gums. She has only been on it for one day and when I got up this morning, she has tummy gurgles, loss of appetite, tummy discomfort so she won't sit still and walks around with her tail down. I suspected the medicine because that is the only new thing I've given her and sure enough when I looked it up, it is the most common side effect. Stopping usage till tomorrow when the vets office reopens from the weekend and getting something different.

      Comments about Clavamox:

I have never seen my dog getting so excited for his meals, he would be waiting right by his bowl once we get home from his walk. He is older and has sensitive stomach, with this food tho, he has not had any stomach problems. And what I m really glad about it is that I don't have to worry anymore about poops that are impossible to pick up :)

My dogs love it, but they love just about anything. It's grain free so that's good. It's pricey, but a cheaper grain-free food.
