Product Information

Interceptor for Dogs 11-25 lbs and cats 1.5-8 lbs will keep your dog or cat safe from heartworms and intestinal parasites. This broad-spectrum preventative is a great addition to your pet’s preventative health program!

What is Interceptor? This is a monthly preventative that is given by mouth (orally). It can be used in dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens to kill the immature form of the heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis). Interceptor works to control adult hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum and Ancylostoma tubaeforme) and to remove and control adult roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, and Toxocara cati) in dogs and cats. It is also effective in preventing and treating whipworms (Trichuris vulpis) in dogs.

Interceptor for Dogs 11-25 lbs is formulated for: dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens of the appropriate body weight. Dogs and puppies need to be over 4 weeks of age and need to weigh more than 2 pounds in order to take Interceptor safely. Cats and kittens must be over 6 weeks of age and must weigh more than 1.5 lbs. Interceptor is safe to use in pregnant and nursing dogs as directed by your veterinarian.

What are the benefits of Interceptor for Dogs 11-25 lbs? Interceptor is a safe, easy, and convenient option to protect your dog or cat from adult heartworms that can cause illness in your pet. It works to kill immature heartworms in their immature stage. Each tablet is highly palatable and is usually taken readily by most pets. It only needs to be given once a month which makes it simple to administer. This medication is broad-spectrum and works to treat and control roundworms and hookworms in dogs and cats. It also treats and controls whipworms in dogs which is an added bonus!

How does Interceptor for Dogs 11-25 lbs work? Milbemycin oxime is the active ingredient in Interceptor. It works by causing an interruption in the nerve transmission of each parasite. This results in paralysis of the affected parasite which ultimately results in the death of immature heartworms (larvae) and adult intestinal worms in your pet. Each monthly dose of Interceptor protects against heartworms that your pet was exposed to in the preceding month. It also controls adult hookworms in both dogs and cats. Interceptor controls and removes adult roundworms in dogs and cats as well as whipworms in dogs.

What results can I expect? Interceptor is effective in inducing death of immature heartworms that your pet was exposed to in the preceding month. This prevents adult heartworms from developing which can be responsible for illness. This medication can also control adult hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum and Ancylostoma tubaeforme) in dogs and cats. It is effective in removing and controlling whipworms (Trichuris vulpis) in dogs and roundworms (ascarids - Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonine) in dogs and cats.

What Form(s) does Interceptor for Dogs 11-25 lbs come in? These are flavored tablets that are available in boxes containing 6 or 12 individual doses.

Common Brand Name: Interceptor (Novartis Animal Health)

Generic Name: Milbemycin oxime (Common Drug Name)

Possible Side Effects: Side effects with Interceptor rarely occur but are possible. Vomiting, depression, diarrhea, drooling, staggering, weakness, and seizures are examples of problems that may occur. If your pet displays any unusual symptoms once he/she has received Interceptor, contact your veterinary immediately.

Drug and Food Interactions: No specific drug or food interactions have been reported with this medication but they are always a possibility. Always tell your veterinarian if your pet is taking other medications, heartworm preventatives, flea/tick preventatives, vitamins, or supplements before starting your pet on Interceptor.

Dose and Administration: Interceptor should be administered to your pet exactly as instructed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions, ask your veterinarian to explain them to you. This medication is given by mouth (orally) once a month and the exact dose is usually based on your dog’s body weight. If a dose is missed, give it as soon as you remember. If over one month has gone by since the last dose, you should speak with your veterinarian before re-starting this medication because heartworm testing may be necessary prior to starting therapy again. If the interval between doses is longer than 30 days, Interceptor’s action may be reduced. Do not remove the tablet from its wrapper until you are ready to give a dose to your pet. Many pets will take Interceptor readily since each tablet is highly palatable. If necessary, you can crumble each tablet and mix it with a small amount of food. Make sure that your pet consumes the entire dose of medication. Observe your pet closely after you administer each dose of medication to make sure that the entire tablet has been ingested. Only give this medication to the pet for which it has been prescribed for.

Precautions: Heartworm testing should be performed prior to starting your pet on Interceptor. This is necessary in order to make sure that your pet can safely tolerate it. Your veterinarian will discuss the frequency of heartworm testing with you. Do not use Interceptor in puppies less than 4 weeks of age or less than 2 pounds. Cats and kittens must be over 6 weeks of age and must weigh more than 1.5 lbs in order to receive Interceptor safely. The safety of Interceptor in pregnant, nursing, or breeding cats has not been determined. Always discuss any previous drug reactions your pet has had with your veterinarian especially if he/she has previously reacted to Interceptor, milbemycin, or any other heartworm medication. Some intestinal worms such as hookworms and roundworms can be spread to people. Ask your veterinarian about other strategies you can use in order to keep your pet and you safe from potentially dangerous intestinal parasites.

Have been using this product for about 5 months now, because of a vet's recomendation. Dogs haven't got sick, but they didn't get sick before either. I guess this product is a little like insurance for something that may happen. It is very easy to use. Both dogs will take it out of my hand without needing to mix with an enticing food.
