Product Information

Help to relieve your pet’s constipation with Lactulose.

Lactulose is: a prescription medication that has a laxative effect. It works to manage your pet’s constipation.

What are the benefits?

1.Easy to administer;2.Works as a stool softener; 3.Helps to manage feline megacolon;4.Can reduce risks of hepatic encephalopathy related to liver disease.

    What outcomes can be expected?

Lactulose works to soften your pet’s stool and bring relief to his/her constipation. You should expect your pet to pass 2-3 soft stools daily.

Symptoms may reoccur is Lactulose is discontinued.

Who is it for: cats and dogs.

    How is it given?

1.Always follow your veterinarian’s directions regarding dosing and dosing frequency.

2.Give prescribed medication orally. It is liquid medication so it is easiest to deliver it directly into your pet’s mouth using a syringe.

3.Some pets may not like the taste of Lactulose. (especially cats)

    4. Call your veterinarian if you have any questions about how to give Lactulose properly.

How does it work? Lactulose, works by increasing the water content and volume of the stools in the bowel. This makes them softer and easier to pass. Lactulose can also reduce the absorption of ammonia from the gut so it can be used in conjunction with other therapies in order to manage liver disease.

Lactulose is available as: an unflavored liquid.

    Generic Name:Lactulose(Common Drug Name)

    Common Brand Name:Enulose/Cephulac

Dose and Administration:Give Lactulose by mouth with or without food. Give directly in your pet’s mouth using a syringe for the most accurate dosing. Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions.

If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember but never give two doses at once.

If you are unsure how to give Lactulose, contact your veterinarian for further instructions. Give this medication only to the pet it has been prescribed for.

Uses:Lactulose is used to relieve constipation and can also be used to manage liver disease in dogs and cats.

Storage:Store at room temperature away from children and pets. Do not refrigerate or freeze. If exposed to heat or light the syrup can darken but this does not affect its potency.

Possible Side Effects: Gastrointestinal side effects are the most commonly reported. Some possibilities include increased gas, bloating cramping, and diarrhea. These side effects usually diminish with time. Other side effects are possible.

Some pets may also experience a true allergic reaction to Lactulose. Symptoms include swelling, listlessness, and shock although this is rare.

Consult your veterinarian if you notice any of the above side effects or if your pet is acting ill after receiving Lactulose. Also tell your veterinarian if less than 2-3 soft stools per day are produced.

Precautions:Do not give to animals with a known allergy to the active ingredients. Caution should be used when giving Lactulose to pets with diabetes or fluid/electrolyte imbalances.

Drug and Food Interactions: Always tell your veterinarian about other medications and supplements your pet is taking prior to giving Lactulose. Some interactions can occur with certain antibiotics, oral antacids, and other laxatives. Other drug interactions may occur.

A prescription from your veterinarian is required to purchase Lactulose.

Comments about Lactulose (Generic to Enulose):

My cat had a tendency to get blocked up so badly, he required enemas. But, my vet prescribed lactulose mixed in his food with every meal, and my cat hasn't had any problems since. It works like a charm!
