Grumpy Cats Star Continues to Rise with Movie Deal

The water company that wanted rid of an image of Grumpy Cat an artist painted on one of its towers may not think much of the sour feline. But apparently Hollywood does because Grumpy Cat is getting a movie.

She will even have a speaking role, which reminds us of the Garfield movie from 2004.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Grumpy Cat, whose real name at home is Tardar Sauce, will be starring in a movie by Broken Road Productions, the company that produced such movies as “Jack and Jill” starring Adam Sandler and “Paul Blart Mall Cop.”

It may not win an Academy Award, but Grumpy Cat was named one of 2013’s top internet memes by Know Your Meme.

Grumpy Cat’s fame started as many internet memes do, one of her mom’s relatives posted a picture of her on Reddit. The cat’s star started to rise within 48 hours when she received 1 million hits on her photo.

Grumpy Cat was then seen around the internet lending her public grumpy persona to many topics. In one, Steve Perry with the band Journey is singing the 1980s mega-hit, “Don’t Stop Believin” and Grumpy Cat responds, “I never started.”

Grumpy Cat’s fame rose and she now has over 800,000 Facebook fans.

Tardar Sauce is far from grumpy at home, though, her mom says she is a very sweet kitty who plays with her feline sister, Pokey.

Grumpy Cat belongs to Tabatha Bundeson, who filed for trademark and copyright protection on her image and merchandise earlier this year.

You can now find her image on t-shirts, calendars, mugs and at least in the beginning, Bundeson was donating most, if not all of the proceeds to animal rescue.

Grumpy Cat even has a book due out from Chronicle books, "Grumpy Cat: A Grumpy Book: Disgruntled Tips and Activities Designed to Put a Frown on Your Face."

Hollywood has obviously taken notice of the popularity of internet cats as this is not the first feline themed movie recently. A documentary about a kitten born to a feral mother premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April and another movie about a cat that gives birth to a litter of kittens on Christmas was for sale at the Cannes Film Festival market.

What do you think, will the Grumpy Cat movie be a hit?
