Cat Diarrhea

  • Clavamox

    by: Clavamox

…guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters or other rodents since it will affect the normal bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and possibly cause fatal diarrhea. Clavamox should be used with caution in very small animals that may be dehydrated or have kidney or heart disorders. Storage: Clavamox tablets…

    Description

Get your pet treatment for his/her infection with Clavamox. Many veterinarians prescribe Clavamox because it is generally safe and effective.

What is Clavamox? Clavamox is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is effective in the treatment of infections of the skin, respiratory tract, and urinary tract. Clavamox can also treat in infected wounds and abscesses.

Formulated for: Cats and dogs can generally take Clavamox safely.

How is this medication given? Clavamox can be given by mouth (orally). Follow your veterinarians instructions precisely although twice daily dosing is common with Clavamox. Only give this medication to the pet for which it has been prescribed. Your pet may start to feel better before a course of medication has been completed. Always use all of the pills that were prescribed in order to prevent reoccurrence of infection or antibiotic resistance.

How does this medication work? Clavamox is a combination antibiotic that contains amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. These medications working together expand the spectrum of bacteria Clavamox is effective in fighting.

What results can I expect? Your pets infection should start to improve once the antibiotic starts working. His/her symptoms should resolve and you should see your pet return to normal. You can notice improvement before the entire course of antibiotic is completed but you should always make sure your pet completes the entire course to make sure the infection does not return and to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

What Form(s) does Clavamox come in? Clavamox can be given as a tablet available in 3 different strengths or as an oral suspension.

Generic Name: Amoxicillin-potassium clavulanate (Common Drug Name)

Common Brand Name: Clavamox (Pfizer Animal Health)

Dose and Administration: Generally, Clavamox is given twice daily. The exact dose and duration of treatment will be determined by your veterinarian so follow his/her instructions. The duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and the development of any adverse effects. Always complete the prescription unless specifically directed by your veterinarian. Even if your pet feels better, the entire treatment plan should be completed to prevent relapse or prevent the development of resistance. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, skip the one you missed. Do not double dose.

Uses: Clavamox is used to treat susceptible bacteria that cause infections in regions of the body including the skin, respiratory tract, bone, and mouth. Clavamox can also be effective in treating infected wounds. Clavamox is not a treatment for viral or parasitic infections.

Possible Side Effects: Clavamox is generally safe. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal in nature and include vomiting, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include shortness of breath, hives, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, rash, or collapse. Other less serious side effect such as a yeast or fungal infection may be more likely to occur. Contact your veterinarian immediately if any unusual symptoms develop while your pet is taking Clavamox.

Drug and Food Interactions: Tell your veterinarian about any vitamins, supplements, or medications your pet is taking before starting Clavamox. Interactions may occur with bacteriostatic drugs such as erythromycin or tetracyclines.

  • Onsior for Cats

    by: Onsior

…musculoskeletal disorders in cats. It can also be used to treat chronic osteoarthritis in dogs. Injectable Onsior can be used by your veterinarian in order to treat post-surgical pain and inflammation. Possible Side Effects: Gastrointestinal side effects such as vomiting and diarrhea were reported…

    Description

Keep your pet comfortable during and after surgery or when he/she is suffering from orthopedic pain with Onsior. Onsior is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication(NSAID) that is effective and gentle enough to administer to cats. This medication is the only NSAID that is labeled for cats. It works by staying at the site of inflammation longer than it stays in the bloodstream which makes Onsior a safe and effective option for managing your pets pain and inflammation.

What is Onsior? This is an oral medication (given by mouth). Onsior also comes in an injectable form that can be administered by your veterinarian as necessary. This is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication(NSAID). It is used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with surgery. It is also used to treat orthopedic pain. In cats, it is labeled to be used short-term(no more than 3 days). It is a specific typed of NSAID called a COXIB. This type of medication targets the COX-2 enzyme that is specifically responsible for causing pain and inflammation. It is a safer option because it also spares the COX-1 enzyme which protects your pets gastrointestinal tract, kidney, and platelet functions. It is an oral medication that your veterinarian can prescribe for your pet as necessary.

Formulated for: Onsior should not be given to cats weighing less than 2.5 kg, dogs less than 3 months of age, or to cats less than 4 months of age.

How is this medication given? Follow your veterinarians precise instructions regarding the use of this medication. The manufacturer recommends dosing this medication at 1 mg/kg. The dose is generally calculated based on your cats body weight. In cats, one tablet should be given once a day at the same time every day for up to 3 days. Cats weighing between 2.5 and 6 kg should be given 1 tablet daily. Cats weighing between 6 and 12 kg need 2 tablets daily. Your veterinarian will determine that correct dose of Onsior for your cat. This medication can be given to your cat without food or with a small amount of food. Tablets should be given whole. Do not divide, break, or crush tablets.

How does this medication work? The active ingredient in Onsior is robenacoxib. This is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory(NSAID) medication that is COX-2 selective and COX-1 sparing. Onsior works by specifically targeting COX-2 enzymes in the body that are responsible for pain and inflammation. The COX-1 enzymes that are present in the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and that are responsible for platelet function are spared with this type of NSAID. This should decrease the side effects and risks associated with NSAIDs including gastrointestinal bleeding.Onsior is tissue selective so it has the ability to identify and target painful sites in the body that are inflamed. This medication moves rapidly through the bloodstream and stays longer at the points of inflammation that need relief from pain and swelling.

Precautions: Do not use in animals who have ulcers of the GI tract. Do not use Onsior in animals that are sensitive or allergic to robenacoxib. If your pet has ever had sensitivity to other NSAIDs, use this medication cautiously and weigh risks vs. benefits before using this medication on these patients.Use caution when using this medication in animals with impaired function of the heart, kidneys, or liver. If the patient is dehydrated or has low blood volume or blood pressure, this medication may also be risky. If this medication must be used in these patients, additional monitoring and fluid therapy may be necessary. The safety of this medication has not been established in pregnant or lactating dogs or cats. Safety studies have not been conducted in cats weighing less than 2.5 kg or in cats less than 4 months of age.

Storage: Tablets should be stored at room temperature away from children and pets. Onsior injectable should be refrigerated.

  • Heartgard for Cats

    by: Heartgard

…tablets make this medication easily accepted by most cats.* Once a month dosing is convenient.* Also helps control and treat hookworms which are common intestinal parasites and can be potentially spread to humans. Uses: Heartgard Chewables for Cats is used to prevent heartworm by killing heartworms…

    Description

Keep your cat safe and protected from heartworm disease and hookworms with Heartgard.

What is Heartgard for Cats? Heartgard is a heartworm preventative that kills feline heartworms and helps to control and treat hookworms. This medication is typically given once a month.

Formulated for: cats and kittens. It is not recommended to give Heartgard to kitten less than 6 weeks of age. It is considered safe to use in pregnant and nursing cats.

How is this medication given? Heartgard for Cats should be given monthly for optimal effectiveness. Try to remember to give this medication on the same day every month if possible. Many veterinarians advise giving Heartgard year round. Depending on your cats risk factors for heartworm disease, your veterinarian may recommend treatment only during the mosquito season. If given seasonally, start giving medication within 30 days of the cat's first exposure to mosquitoes. The last dose needs to be given within 30 days after the cat's last exposure to mosquitoes. Ask your veterinarian regarding his/her recommendations.

Heartgard for Cats is generally taken as a treat. Tablets need to be chewed so break tablets into small pieces and administer if your cat has a tendency to swallow without chewing. Make sure food is available during the day of treatment. Each tablet may not be absorbed well if it is swallowed whole or if a portion of it is not swallowed so it is important that your cat takes the entire dose. If you notice that your cat does not ingest the entire tablet, it is generally recommended to give another full dose as soon as possible. If you have trouble giving Heartgard to your cat, contact your veterinarian for further instructions.

How does this medication work? Heartgard causes interference in the nerve transmission of heartworms and hookworms. This results in paralysis and death of immature heartworms and hookworms. Killing heartworms and hookworms in their immature stage prevents the adults which are responsible for illness from developing. The active ingredient that is responsible for this is Ivermectin which is a worming medication that helps prevent heartworm and some types of intestinal parasites.

What results can I expect? Adult heartworms and hookworms should be prevented by killing these parasites in their immature stage. This should keep your cat protected from feline heartworm disease and hookworms.

What Form(s) does Heartgard come in? Heartgard is available for cats in a tablet that is chewable. You can purchase this preventative in a 6 month or 12 month supply.

    Generic Name: Ivermectin

Common Brand Name: Heartgard Chewables for Cats (Merial)

Dose and Administration: It is recommended by the American Heartworm Society that heartworm prevention be used year round although you should check with your veterinarian for his/her recommendations.

This medication is given one time per month as is given orally. Tablets are chewable and should be chewed and should not be swallowed whole. Most cats will accepts this medication as a treat. If your cat has a tendency to swallow his/her food or treats whole, you can break each tablet into small pieces. Make sure your cat has food available on the day of treatment. Check to make sure your cat swallows the complete dose. If not, give another pill as soon as you remember.

If you are late on your cats monthly dose, this medication may not be optimally effective. If more than one monthly dose has been missed, do not restart this medication until you speak with your veterinarian. Contact your veterinarian if you have trouble giving this medication. This medication should only be given to the pet for which it was prescribed.

This item is a great replacement option for Interceptor, which has been discontinued by the manufacturer.

    Description

What is Zeniquin? Zeniquin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is indicated for the treatment of susceptible infections. This medication fights infections of the skin, soft tissue, and urinary tract but it is also effective against bacteria in other parts of the body. Small and medium dogs should be over 8 months of age and giant breed dogs should be over 18 months of age in order to ensure safe administration.

How does this medication work? Zeniquin is an example of a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. These antibiotics work to kill susceptible bacteria by inhibiting DNA replication.

What results can I expect? Signs of your pets infection should begin to dissipate and your pet should start to feel better. Dose and Administration: Give Zeniquin tablets by mouth (orally) as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand how to give this medication or if have difficulty administering it, contact your veterinarian for further instructions. Make sure you use all of the medication that is prescribed even if your pet appears well. There is a higher tendency for the infection to recur or worsen if you do not complete the entire course of treatment. Provide plenty of fresh water for your pet to drink while taking this medication. Do not give this medication within two hours of giving dairy products. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.

Possible side effects include vomiting, decreased appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, cough, excessive thirst, vocalization, increased appetite, redness of skin, hyperactivity, and excessive salivation. If your dog acts unusual…

    Description

Solve your dogs flea problems and prevent future flea infestations with Comfortis chewable tablets!

What is Comfortis? Comfortis is a beef-flavored chewable tablet that is given once a month. It works to kill fleas and to prevent and treat flea infestations in dogs.

Formulated for: Dogs and puppies over 14 weeks of age can receive Comfortis.

How is this medication given? Comfortis is an oral medication. Since it is flavored and chewable, most dogs take it easily.

Give this medication with food if possible. You should give another full dose of Comfortis if vomiting happens to occur within one hour of administration.

Giving Comfortis one month before active flea season starts will help to achieve optimal results. Once fleas become active, it is advised to continue this medication monthly until flea season ends. In regions where fleas are active year-round, this medication may be required monthly every month of the year to ensure adequate flea control.

Comfortis is available in multiple sizes and your dogs dose will be determined by his/her body weight. If your dog exceeds 120 lbs, you will need to give a combination of the appropriate sizes of medication in order to achieve the best results.

This medication can be prescribed for your dog by your veterinarian. You should give Comfortis only to the pet that it is prescribed for.

How does this medication work? Spinosad is the active ingredient in Comfortis. It works to excite the fleas nervous system which causes paralysis. This results in the death of fleas.

What results can I expect? Once Comfortis is administered, fleas should start to die within 30 minutes. Each dose remains effective for one month (30 days).

If Comfortis is given to your dog and he/she is infested with fleas, it is possible for fleas to linger beyond 30 days. This is because immature fleas in the environment still have the opportunity to hatch.

Comfortis is one key part of a good flea prevention program. Speak with your veterinarian about other precautions you can take to rid your dog of fleas and to prevent future infestations.

What Form(s) does Comfortis come in? This medication is available as a chewable tablet with beef flavoring. Different strengths are available ranging from 140 mg (5-10 lbs) to 1620 mg (60.1-120 lbs). The dose of medication your dog requires is based on his/her body weight.

Generic Name: Spinosad (Common Drug Name)

    Common Brand Name: Comfortis (Lilly)

Dose and Administration: Comfortis is generally given once a month but always follow your veterinarians directions. It is recommended to give Comfortis chewable tablets with food.

Comfortis chewable tablets may be chewed, offered in food, or administered directly in the mouth like other medications.

If your pet vomits his/her medication within 1 hour of administration, you can repeat the dose.

Ideally, it is recommended to start giving Comfortis one month before fleas become active. After that, this medication should be given monthly through the end of the flea season.

If fleas are common in your area year-round, continue Comfortis monthly all 12 months of the year.

If there are fleas in the home, all pets should be treated with appropriate flea medication. Fleas need to be on your dog for this medication to kill them. Talk to your vet about other strategies you can use to eliminate flea infestations from your home.

Only give this medication to the pet that your veterinarian prescribes it for. If you are unsure of how to use this medication correctly, contact your veterinarian.

Uses: Comfortis is used to kill fleas and to prevent flea infestations in dogs for a full month.

It is used in situations where rehydration is necessary. Examples of this include shock, decreased oral intake of fluid and food, illness such as kidney disease, and other problems. This solution can be given at home as necessary and your veterinarian can teach you the proper administration technique.

Formulated for: cats, dogs, and other species including horses and livestock.

How is this medication given? Lactated Ringers is an injectable liquid that can be given under the skin (subcutaneously) or in the vein (intravenously) as prescribed by your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will determine the proper amount of fluid and route administration that is best for your pet so always follow his/her instructions. If you have trouble giving this medication or if you do not understand the directions, contact your veterinarian. If you forget to give a dose, try to give it as soon as you remember but do not give two doses at once. Your veterinarian may instruct you and teach you how to give Lactated Ringers at home. For proper administration, you will also need a fluid drip set and a needle in addition to the bag of fluids. Your veterinarian will let you know what equipment is necessary. In general, Lactated Ringers can be administered as follows:
    1. Remove the fluid bag and fluid drip set from their protective packaging.
    2. Close the line lock in the middle of the fluid tubing by moving the roller so that it squeezes the tubing. The lock on a new fluid set is usually set to the open position.
    3. The top end of the fluid set has a large, pointed end with a protective cap. Remove this cap, but do not allow it to become contaminated. MAKE SURE IT DOES NOT TOUCH ANYTHING.
    4. Pull off the covering from the exit port on the bottom end of the fluid bag and push the pointed end of the fluid set into the open hole of the fluid bag. Make sure it is seated firmly or it can leak.
    5. Squeeze and release the bulb at the top of the drip set until the bulb chamber is about half full with fluid.
    6. Open the line lock and/or roller on the tubing and then hold or suspend the fluid bag. Fill the fluid line with fluid from the bag until it runs the entire length of the tubing. Be sure that all large air bubbles run out of the tubing.
    7. After the fluid line has been primed, close the lock and move the roller down.
    8. Twist the needle on to the end of the fluid line as clean as possible. Do not contaminate the open end.
    9. Insert the needle and deliver fluid as directed by your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can answer any questions you may have regarding the use of Lactated Ringers. This medication should only be given to the pet for which it was prescribed. Needles and drip sets are also available only when prescribed by a veterinarian.

How does this medication work? It works to restore electrolytes (sodium, chloride, potassium, etc.) in situations where there is a loss of fluid. Lactated Ringers rehydrates the body and helps to maintain proper hydration. Hydration is necessary for normal body function.
