    Description

Temaril-P is:an antihistamine (trimeprazine)/corticosteroid (prednisolone) combination. This combination helps to relieve common inflammatory disorders such as kennel cough (tracheobronchitis), bronchitis/coughs of nonspecific origin (except coughs due to cardiac insufficiencies), parasitic/bacterial infections, eczema, and canine allergies.

What are the benefits? 1. Scored tablets can be split easily and make it easy to give correct dose; 2. Unique antihistamine/corticosteroid combination; 3. Acts as an antitussive (relieves coughing) and as an antipruritic (relieves itching).

What outcomes can be expected? Temaril-P will not cure the underlying problem. Antihistamine (Trimeprazine) and steroid (Prednisolone) work well to relieve coughing and itching occuring with tracheobronchitis (kennel cough), canine allergies, and other causes.

    Who is it for: Dogs.

How does it work? Trimeprazine blocks histamine in the body. Prednisolone reduces inflammation of the skin and respiratory system.

Temaril-P is available as: an oral tablet.

Generic Name: Trimeprazine (5mg) with Prednisolone (2mg) . No generic products are available. Compounded products may be available.

Common Brand Name: Temaril-P (Pfizer Animal Health)

Dose and administration: A prescription from your veterinarian is required in order to purchase this medication. The dose is usually based on dogs weight but dose and duration of treatment will be determined by your veterinarian. Temaril P should always be reduced gradually before stopping. Taking with food to lessens stomach upset. Make sure dog has continuous access to water while using. If you forget to give a dose, give it as soon as your remember. If it is too close to the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not double dose.

Uses: Temaril-P works to relieve inflammation. It targets inflammation of the respiratory tract and skin specifically. Coughing from allergic bronchitis, infections, or other causes, and itching/inflammation of the skin and ear due to allergies are all examples of problems that can be helped with this medication.

Storage: Temaril-P should be stored in a tight, childproof, light-resistant container at room temperature. Keep out of reach from children and pets.

Possible side effects: Side effects are usually dose dependent and may include sedation, exposed third eyelid, muscle tremors, weakness, blood disorders, and an increase in drinking, eating, and urinating. Your pet may have more "accidents" and need to relieve themselves more often. Less common side effects include increased appetite, weight gain, panting, diarrhea, vomiting, and behavior changes.

Muscle loss, weakness, and the development of diabetes or hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) may occur if this medication is used long-term. Longer term use of Temaril-P can also cause immune system suppression (especially at higher doses). Immune suppression can make a pet more susceptible to infection. Contact your veterinarian if your pet displays symptoms of infection.

If your pet is truly allergic to this medication, he/she can exhibit symptoms including facial swelling, hives, scratching, diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma.

Other side effects are possible. If side effects occur or if your pet is acting unusual in any way while taking this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately for further instructions. He/she may decrease the dosage or frequency of administration or discontinue this medication and/or recommend further treatment if there are medication-related problems.

    by: Metacam

Precautions: Talk to your veterinarian about what tests and exams may be necessary while your pet is taking Metacam. Also discuss how long the treatment period will be and what type of outcome is expected. You and your veterinarian should talk about any other treatment options that are recommended…

    Description

If your dog suffers from a degenerative or inflammatory joint condition such as arthritis, consider Metacam in order to relieve his/her pain which should help your canine companion to live a healthy, enjoyable life.

What is Metacam? Metacam is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication that is commonly recommended by veterinarians in order to relieve pain, inflammation, and other symptoms associated with arthritis in dogs.

What are the benefits of Metacam? :

    • Liquid suspension allows easy, convenient and accurate dosing for dogs of all sizes.
    • Palatable taste dogs easily accept.
    • May be used as long-term treatment for chronic arthritis in dogs.

Formulated for: dogs. There are no safety studies regarding the use of Metacam in dogs less than 6 months of age or in pregnant, breeding, or nursing dogs.

How is this medication given? Metacam is commonly prescribed to be given once a day but your veterinarian will determine the exact dosing regimen for your dog.

Metacam should be given by mouth (orally). Shake the liquid well before use. You can measure your dogs exact dose using the syringe provided by the manufacturer. You can give this medication on your dogs food or directly in your dogs mouth. Giving Metacam in the food is commonly recommended for more accurate dosing in small dogs. The goal is to use the lowest dose necessary in order to provide relief especially if Metacam in used long-term.

How does this medication work? Metacam is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID). NSAIDs inhibit the synthesis of certain body chemicals called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals that are released throughout your pet's bloodstream that can result in pain. Inhibiting the production of prostaglandins can effectively reduce pain in your dog making him/her more comfortable.

What results can I expect? Metacam can help manage your dogs symptoms associated with his/her arthritis or other inflammatory condition including pain but is not a cure as there is no cure for arthritis. Symptoms can be relieved within hours to days but can vary from dog to dog. You should notice less pain and increased mobility. Symptoms may reoccur if Metacam is discontinued.

What Form(s) does Metacam come in? Metacam comes in liquid.
