    Description

Vetsulin (porcine insulin zinc suspension) is the only FDA-approved veterinary product for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in both dogs and cats. Vetsulin is indicated for the reduction of hyperglycemia(elevated blood sugar) and hyperglycemia-associated clinical signs in dogs and cats with diabetes mellitus. Vetsulin is supplied as a sterile injectable porcine insulin zinc suspension. Vetsulin needs to be refrigerated and is only available by prescription from your veterinarian.

Manufacturer: Intervet/ Schering Plough Animal Health

Extra Information: Insulin is a hormone naturally produced by the pancreas. Insulin enables the body to use the sugar in food as a source of energy. When the body does not produce enough insulin, or when the insulin produced by the body is not effective enough, this condition is called diabetes mellitus. This condition allows sugar levels in the body to become very high. Vetsulin is Purified porcine (pork) insulin zinc suspension that can help to reduce high blood sugar(hyperglycemia) and manage related symptoms.

Dosing and Administration: Suggested initial dosing by the manufacturer is as follows:

    For Dogs:
0.5 IU insulin/kg of body weight. This dose should be given once daily concurrently with or right after a meal. Veterinarians should reevaluate canine patients at appropriate intervals and adjust the dose based on clinical signs, urinalysis results, and glucose curve values until adequate control has been attained.

    For Cats:
For cats, the initial recommended dose of Vetsulin (porcine insulin zinc suspension) is 1 to 2 IU per injection twice daily. In cats, initially administer twice-daily doses 12 hours apart concurrently with or right after meals. Reevaluate the cat at appropriate intervals and adjust the dose based on clinical signs, urinalysis results, and glucose curve/spot check values until adequate control has been attained.

However, proper Vetsulin dosing for your individual pet can only be determined by your veterinarian.

Vetsulin is given using a U-40 syringe only. Use of a syringe other than a U-40 syringe will result in incorrect dosing. Vetsulin is administered by subcutaneous(under the skin) injection. Proper technique can be taught by your veterinarian. Do not reuse a syringe. Dispose of all syringes in an appropriate puncture-resistant disposal container. Vetsulin should be stored in an upright position under refrigeration. Do not freeze, Protect from light. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.

If any amount of Vetsulin is given other than what is prescribed or if you miss a dose, contact your veterinarian for further instructions.

  • AlphaTRAK 2 Control Solution

    by: AlphaTRAK

…it is specifically manufactured for use in diabetic dogs and cats. At home blood monitoring is not a substitution for regular veterinary care and should be used in conjunction with testing and treatment by your veterinarian in order to treat your diabetic pet as precisely as possible. Storage: Store…

    Description

AlphaTRAK 2 Glucose Control Solution is used to perform quality control testing on the AlphaTRAK Blood Glucose Monitoring System. It allows you to make sure that your system is working correctly and it helps to verify that blood glucose (sugar) readings are accurate and reliable.

What is the AlphaTRAK 2 Control Solution? AlphaTRAK 2 Control Solution contains a fixed amount of glucose. It is used in conjunction with the AlphaTRAK Glucose Monitoring Kit including glucometer and test strips. Control solution helps ensure that your glucose meter is working properly so that each test result is accurate and dependable. Each package contains 2 bottles (4 ml) of control solution.

Formulated for: Dogs and cats. Not for human use.

How does this product work? Control solution tests should be performed under the following circumstances: when you first get the meter, before doing a blood test, when you begin using a new vial of test strips, if you have forgotten to close the test strip vial, when you suspect that the meter or test strips are not working properly, when the blood glucose test results are not consistent with how the animal is acting, or when you think the results are not accurate. A control test should also be run If you drop the meter or upon the advice of a veterinarian. For detailed instructions on how to run a control test, refer to your user manual. A control test is run using the same procedures as with a drop of blood. Insert a test strip into the meter and make sure your meter is set up and ready to use(see user manual). Shake well and gently invert the control solution bottle. Wipe the tip with tissue and discard the first two drops. Apply and hold control solution to 1 sample area of the test strip until you see short lines moving clockwise on the display or until you hear a beep. This indicates the test strip obtained enough control solution and the meter is processing. If the test does not start after applying the control solution, go to Troubleshooting section. The result appears on the display when the test is complete. The result should match the glucose value range listed on the bottle of test strips if the meter and test strips are working properly.

Uses: AlphaTRAK 2 Control Solution is used with the AlphaTRAK and AlphaTRAK 2 Glucose Starter Kit (including test strips and glucometer). Control solution is used to run a test in order to verify the accuracy of the AlphaTRAK and AlphaTRAK2 Glucose Meter and Test Strips. A control test using control solution should be used in several situations. Tests should be run when you use the meter for the first time, before doing a blood test, when you begin using a new vial of test strips, if you have forgotten to close the test strip vial, when you suspect that the meter or test strips are not working properly, when the blood glucose test results are not consistent with how the animal is acting, or when you think the results are not accurate. A control test should also be run If you drop the meter or upon the advice of a veterinarian. After running a control test, replace the cap on the bottle and close it tightly.

Precautions: For external use only. Changes in blood sugar (too low or too high) can indicate a potentially serious medical condition. If you test your pets blood glucose(sugar) levels and they are unusually low or high, repeat the test with a new test strip. If the reading is still abnormal after retesting and if readings are not consistent with any visible symptoms or if the blood glucose level is less than 80 mg/dL for dog's and less than 100 mg/dL for cats or higher than 250 mg/dL for dogs and higher than 300 mg/dL for cats, you should contact your veterinarian immediately for further instructions. At home testing is not a substitution for regular veterinary care but should be used in conjunction with veterinary visits in order to provide your veterinarian with additional information to assist in treating your diabetic pet.
