What is Trifexis? Trifexis is an oral preventative medication that can be given every 30 days to provide protection against fleas, heartworm, disease, and common intestinal parasites. How does this medication work? Milbemycin oxime and spinosad are the main ingredients that help to protect your dog from heartworms, fleas, and intestinal parasites. Milbemycin oxime works to help prevent heartworm disease. It works to kill the immature form of the heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) before heartworms have the chance to develop into adults that can cause active disease. Milbemycin is also effective in killing common adult intestinal parasites (hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms) that can cause problems in your dog. Spinosad helps to kill fleas and prevent future flea infestations by killing adult fleas and immature fleas.
What results can I expect? Trifexis works almost immediately. It starts to kill fleas within 30 minutes and can kill 100% of all biting fleas within 4 hours. Drug and Food Interactions: Always tell your veterinarian about any medications, vitamins, or supplements your dog is taking before you start giving him/her Trifexis. Some serious adverse reactions have been documented when spinosad and ivermectin at doses higher than the heartworm prevention dose were used simultaneously. No known food interactions have been reported.
Uses: Trifexis is given to dogs one time per month in order to prevent heartworm disease, kill fleas, prevent flea infestations, and treat/control adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections.
Possible Side Effects: If using Trifexis at the recommended dosage, side effects are rare. Symptoms of gastrointestinal distress and skin irritation can occur. Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy (decreased activity), lack of appetite, and itching and reddening of the skin are possible. Each tube contains the specific amount of medication for your pet. Do not split the contents of each vial.
