    Veterinarians prescribe Zonisamide as a single medication or in combination with other medication in order to control seizure disorders in dogs and cats.

    What is Zonisamide? This is a capsule that is given in order to treat seizures that occur as a result of epilepsy and other causes. Some veterinarians prescribe it as a single medication or in conjunction with other medications in order to control seizures in dogs and cats.

    How is this medication given?Zonisamide should be given exactly according to your veterinarians instructions. Make sure your pet has water available at all times while taking this medication. Zonisamide can be given with or without food. Capsule cannot be broken. Always give them whole. If you are unsure of how to use this medication correctly, always call your veterinarian.

    How does this medication work? The exact mechanism of action is unknown but Zonisamide supposedly blocks sodium channels in the brain which decreases activity of nerve cells so they do not fire abnormally. Zonisamide may also alter calcium levels in the brain.

    What results can I expect? Zonisamide usually takes about 2 to 4 hours to work to its maximum. If your pet is going to have side effects, you may be more aware of them during this time period. Half of this medication will be excreted from the body within Zonisamide 50 to 70 hours.

    Dose and Administration:Zonisamide should be given only as directed by your veterinarian. It can be given with or without food. This medication can make your pet thirsty so make sure your pet has water at all times. If you forget to give a dose, give it when you remember but never give two doses at once. Give this medication only to the pet it has been prescribed for.

    b>Uses:Zonisamide is an anti-convulsant. It can be used to manage seizures by itself or along with other medications when used according to your veterinarians directions.

    Possible Side Effects: Drowsiness, incoordination, excitability, and loss of appetite can occur in pets who take this medication. Other side effects are possible.

    Your pet can have an allergic reaction if he/she is hypersensitive to Zonisamide.

    Call your veterinarian without delay if your pet is acting sick or unusual while taking this medication.

    Drug and Food Interactions: Carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and topiramate may interact with Zonisamide. Other drug interactions may occur. Always tell your veterinarian about all medications and supplements your pet is taking to make sure he/she can be given Zonisamide safely.

    Precautions:Do not give Zonisamide to pets who are allergic to similar medications or to sulfonamides. If your pet has liver or kidney disease, use Zonisamide with caution only as directed by your veterinarian and only if the benefits outweigh the risks. This medication cannot be used in pregnant females because birth defects can occur in fetuses that are exposed to Zonisamide.

    Storage:Zonisamide should be stored at room temperature out of reach from children, pets, and light.
