Vetsulin is Purified porcine (pork) insulin zinc suspension that can help to reduce high blood sugar(hyperglycemia) and manage related symptoms.

Dosing and Administration: Suggested initial dosing by the manufacturer is as follows:

    For Dogs:
0.5 IU insulin/kg of body weight. This dose should be given once daily concurrently with or right after a meal. Vetsulin should be stored in an upright position under refrigeration. Do not freeze, Protect from light. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.

Symptoms of an allergic…

    Description

What is ProZinc Insulin for Cats? ProZinc is a protamine zinc insulin. It FDA approved for use in diabetic cats. Protamine zinc insulin formulations have a typical duration of effect in the cat of 10-14 hours which helps keep your cats blood glucose level consistent throughout the day.

    Formulated for: Cats.

How is this medication given? The dose and frequency of administration is individual depending on your cats needs so always follow your veterinarians precise directions. The initial recommended dose is 0.1 - 0.3 IU insulin/pound of body weight (0.2-0.7 IU/kg) every 12 hours. Gently roll each vial with the palm of your hands before giving each dose. Do not start giving ProZinc to your cat until you are properly trained to do so by your veterinarian. ProZinc injections are given subcutaneously (under the skin). Give ProZinc injections with a U-40 syringe(sold separately) or dosing will be inaccurate. It is best to give each injection of ProZinc at feeding time or just afterward. It is also best to give the injections at the same time every day because it will help your cat maintain the most stable blood glucose levels.

How does this medication work? ProZinc supplements diabetic cats with the insulin that is necessary to control hyperglycemia(high blood sugar). Protamine and zinc help to maintain results for up to 14 hours. This helps your cat to maintain a consistent blood glucose level throughout the day. ProZinc contains recombinant DNA which mimics human insulin and helps to control your cats diabetic symptoms.

What results can I expect? ProZinc does not cure diabetes. It will, however, help to control the symptoms or signs associated with this disease which should help your cat to feel better. Adequate control of your cats diabetes can be achieved with a combination of insulin injections, diet, and in some cases, weight loss. A small percentage of diabetic cats may no longer require insulin injections after some treatment but this is rare.

What Form(s) does ProZinc Insulin for Cats come in? ProZinc is an injectable liquid solution. It is available in 40 units per mL concentration. Each vial contains 10ml.

Generic Name: Protamine zinc recombinant human insulin

Common Brand Name: ProZinc (Boehringer Ingelheim)

Dose and Administration: Insulin dosing varies depending on your cats specific needs so always follow your veterinarians instructions carefully. The manufacturers initial recommended dose is 0.1 - 0.3 IU insulin/pound of body weight (0.2-0.7 IU/kg) every 12 hours. ProZinc Insulin for Cats is an injectable medication that is given under the skin(subcutaneously). Do not start ProZinc injections until you have been trained to do so correctly by a veterinary professional. Mix each vial by rolling it gently between the palms of your hands before each use. Use only U-40 syringes(sold separately) or dosing will be inaccurate. Use a new syringe each time you give your cat an injection. ProZinc should be given at feeding time or just afterward unless your veterinarian tells you otherwise. Try to give the injections at the same time every day and feed your cat at the same time every day in order to achieve optimal results.

Uses: ProZinc is a protamine zinc insulin that is indicated for the reduction of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and hyperglycemia-associated clinical signs in cats with diabetes mellitus. It is FDA approved for use in diabetic cats.

  • Humulin N Insulin

    by: Humulin

…such as glipizide may help lower insulin requirements, as may chromium picolate. Caution should be used when starting treatment for thyroid disorders in a diabetic animal because insulin needs may change. Changes in potassium levels are also possible when using insulin along with heart medications…

    Description

What is Humulin N insulin? a hormone used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. It is a type of human insulin that often works well in treating diabetes mellitus in dogs too. It is a crystalline suspension with protamine and zinc. It is immediate-acting insulin which means that it is slower in onset and lasts longer (up to 24 hours).

Formulated for : humans but is commonly used to treat dogs with diabetes mellitus. It is sometimes used for cats too but this is less common.

How is this medication given? It is an injectable medication, generally given by subcutaneous injection (under the skin). Humulin N insulin is used to help control blood glucose levels in diabetic pets. The amount and frequency that your pet needs is individual and will be determined by your veterinarian. It is given once a day or twice a day based on your veterinarians recommendation. Just prior to use, mix the vial gently rolling it between the palms of your hands approximately 10 times. Humulin N must be used with a U-100 insulin syringe only. Use of an insulin syringe other than U-100 will result in incorrect dosing.

How does this medication work? Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas. Humulin N mimics the insulin that is normally produced. Pets with diabetes mellitus do not produce enough insulin on their own to control their blood sugar (glucose). This results in hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Humulin N controls hyperglycemia and helps relieve the symptoms of diabetes mellitus in dogs.

What results can I expect? Insulin is not a cure for diabetes. It will, however, help to bring your pets blood sugar to normal range. This will help manage your pets symptoms such as increased drinking (polydipsia) and increased urination (polyuria)

What Form(s) does Humulin N come in? a liquid, injectable medication available in 10 mL vials containing 100 units per mL.

Generic Name : NPH human insulin

    Common Brand Name: Humulin-N (Lilly)

Dose and Administration : Humulin N is a human insulin. It is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine but it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to use this medication in dogs and cats. It is very important to follow your veterinarians precise instructions regarding this medication. The dose of Humulin N insulin is determined by means of a blood glucose test and is individual for your pet. Do not give your pet an injection of this or any other medication unless you have been trained on how to do so by your veterinarian.

Doses can vary and will be determined by your veterinarian. Do not shake the insulin prior to use but roll it between the palms of your hands to mix everything up. If you miss a dose of Humulin N, contact your veterinarian for further instructions.

Only use prescribed U-100 syringes (sold separately) with Humulin N or the dose will be given incorrectly.

Insulin should be given with food to make sure your pets blood sugar does not fall too low. Your veterinarian will instruct you on the best diet and exercise plan for your pet.

Possible Side Effects: Side effects may include weakness, tiredness, shaking, seizures or coma which may be the result of your pets blood sugar falling too low(hypoglycemia). Some cats may appear immobile although this is rare.

Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) has symptoms of increased thirst and urination, vomiting, and change in gait or weakness. If you notice these symptoms once your pets diabetes has been regulated, the dose may need to be adjusted.

Symptoms of a true allergic reaction include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, or coma. If your pet demonstrates any unusual symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately because immediate treatment may be necessary.

  • Temaril-P

    by: Temaril-P

…(Rimadyl), deracoxib (Deramaxx), or etodolac (EtoGesic) can increase the risk of gastrointestinal ulcers if they are given with Temaril-P. Insulin requirements may also increase in diabetic animals taking this medication. A prescription from your veterinarian is necessary to purchase Temaril-P…

    Description

Temaril-P is:an antihistamine (trimeprazine)/corticosteroid (prednisolone) combination. This combination helps to relieve common inflammatory disorders such as kennel cough (tracheobronchitis), bronchitis/coughs of nonspecific origin (except coughs due to cardiac insufficiencies), parasitic/bacterial infections, eczema, and canine allergies.

What are the benefits? 1. Scored tablets can be split easily and make it easy to give correct dose; 2. Unique antihistamine/corticosteroid combination; 3. Acts as an antitussive (relieves coughing) and as an antipruritic (relieves itching).

What outcomes can be expected? Temaril-P will not cure the underlying problem. Antihistamine (Trimeprazine) and steroid (Prednisolone) work well to relieve coughing and itching occuring with tracheobronchitis (kennel cough), canine allergies, and other causes.

    Who is it for: Dogs.

How does it work? Trimeprazine blocks histamine in the body. Prednisolone reduces inflammation of the skin and respiratory system.

Temaril-P is available as: an oral tablet.

Generic Name: Trimeprazine (5mg) with Prednisolone (2mg) . No generic products are available. Compounded products may be available.

Common Brand Name: Temaril-P (Pfizer Animal Health)

Dose and administration: A prescription from your veterinarian is required in order to purchase this medication. The dose is usually based on dogs weight but dose and duration of treatment will be determined by your veterinarian. Temaril P should always be reduced gradually before stopping. Taking with food to lessens stomach upset. Make sure dog has continuous access to water while using. If you forget to give a dose, give it as soon as your remember. If it is too close to the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not double dose.

Uses: Temaril-P works to relieve inflammation. It targets inflammation of the respiratory tract and skin specifically. Coughing from allergic bronchitis, infections, or other causes, and itching/inflammation of the skin and ear due to allergies are all examples of problems that can be helped with this medication.

Storage: Temaril-P should be stored in a tight, childproof, light-resistant container at room temperature. Keep out of reach from children and pets.

Possible side effects: Side effects are usually dose dependent and may include sedation, exposed third eyelid, muscle tremors, weakness, blood disorders, and an increase in drinking, eating, and urinating. Your pet may have more "accidents" and need to relieve themselves more often. Less common side effects include increased appetite, weight gain, panting, diarrhea, vomiting, and behavior changes.

Muscle loss, weakness, and the development of diabetes or hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) may occur if this medication is used long-term. Longer term use of Temaril-P can also cause immune system suppression (especially at higher doses). Immune suppression can make a pet more susceptible to infection. Contact your veterinarian if your pet displays symptoms of infection.

If your pet is truly allergic to this medication, he/she can exhibit symptoms including facial swelling, hives, scratching, diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma.

Other side effects are possible. If side effects occur or if your pet is acting unusual in any way while taking this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately for further instructions. He/she may decrease the dosage or frequency of administration or discontinue this medication and/or recommend further treatment if there are medication-related problems.
